<p class="wp-block-paragraph">SEOUL — South Korea’s arms development agency has completed its application research on <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/global/asia-pacific/2020/12/10/south-korea-accerlates-deployment-of-unmanned-systems/" target="_blank">robotic technology</a> for autonomous tunnel exploration.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Agency for Defense Development announced June 21 that research for the Autonomous Tunnel Exploration Robot was conducted over the past three years in collaboration with the Ground Vehicle System Center, which is part of the U.S. Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Both institutions from South Korea and the United States have applied common middleware, interface, and data formats in this research to help establish joint robot-based operational capabilities,” the agency said in a news release, noting that both sides developed their own robot systems and related software.</p>





<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Through its own research and development, the agency designed and produced a modular robot in cooperation with Hanwha Defense, a local defense contractor. The robot can explore underground tunnels without topographic information, detecting risks and generating a 3D map of the exploration area, according to the agency. It can also receive modifications to perform different missions, and it is equipped with artificial intelligence-based software for recognition, judgement and exploration functions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, a single operator can control the robot remotely with a mobile phone or tablet, allowing the user to wield multiple systems at once.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Even in caves and underground facilities where GPS signals cannot be received, a robot with ATE [autonomous tunnel exploration] technology is able to conduct autonomous driving and explore areas without prior information,” the agency said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the application research, a prototype robot succeeded in exploring a 1.5-kilometer (0.9-mile) cave by recognizing various types of dangerous objects, detecting contaminated areas and creating a high-resolution 3D map, it added.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The agency plans to use the technology for systems development over the next decade. <a href="https://www.add.re.kr/board?menuId=MENU02924&#038;siteId=SITE00003" target="_blank">On its website</a>, the agency describes “future battlefields” where the platform would carry out reconnaissance missions to caves and hazardous facilities, instead of a human doing so.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">South Korea and North Korea technically remain at war since the 1950-1953 Korean War ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty. In the 1970s, four underground tunnels verified as North Korean networks were found along the inter-Korean border, without a new find since.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Once deployed in the field, the ATE robot will conduct missions to secure the safety of combatants during underground operations and urban warfare and increase operational efficiency to an extent,” an agency spokesman said. “In the private sector, the robot can be deployed to places difficult to access, such as disaster sites and nuclear power plant facilities.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">SEOUL — South Korea has launched a task force to further develop space capabilities for its military, following U.S. approval earlier this year to <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/global/asia-pacific/2021/05/25/us-lifts-missile-restrictions-on-south-korea-ending-range-and-warhead-limits/" target="_blank">lift a restriction</a> on the country’s missile production program.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The vice chief of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, which made the announcement Aug. 19, will lead the team made up of key personnel from the Ministry of National Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Agency for Defense Development and other government organizations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The task force will draw up a master plan, in cooperation with related organizations and industries, to develop regulations, technologies, industries, facilities and infrastructure concerned,” DAPA said in a statement.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A week earlier, the agency endorsed a plan to invest nearly $13 billion over the next decade to help local industries develop technologies for military satellites. To that end, the Agency for Defense Development decided to transfer core satellite technologies to local defense contractors in preparation for the mass production of military satellites.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Space programs can be developed further through active and organic cooperation between government agencies to address the various demands from defense, science and technology, and industry,” Seo Hyung-jin, vice commissioner of DAPA, told reporters. “In that regard, the space task force will play an active role in boosting the space industry under a midterm and long-term road map.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The effort to bolster its space defense capability comes as the country saw limits removed on its rocket development in May. U.S. President Joe Biden and his South Korean counterpart, Moon Jae-in, agreed to end a 42-year-old bilateral missile guideline that restricted Seoul’s ballistic missile range to 800 kilometers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">South Korea is now in the position to develop more powerful rocket engines and play catchup in the commercial space sector.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Commercial space projects in South Korea have seen tangible progress, with the country launching its homegrown, three-stage Nuri rocket, a $1.8 billion project designed to put a 1.5-ton satellite into orbit about 600-800 kilometers above the Earth this year.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The launch of the Nuri rocket, also known as KSLV-2, would be a major advancement over the two-stage Naro space vehicle built with domestic and Russian technology. The Naro was hit with delays and two failed launches before a successful flight in 2013 carried a 100-kilogram (221-pound) research satellite to space.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under a space development road map drawn up by the National Space Committee, South Korea would launch 110 dual-use satellites with the aim of nurturing the domestic satellite market and meeting demand, Science and ICT Minister Lim Hye-sook told reporters June 9.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among the 110 small satellites are reconnaissance versions for military purposes; communications satellites for testing 6G broadband internet; and observation satellites for monitoring space weather.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The space industry is a cutting-edge industry that’s based on intelligence but also a crucial one for national strategy in terms of securing national security and public safety,” Lim said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hanwha, which was recently <a href="https://people.defensenews.com/top-100/" target="_blank">ranked</a> as the 28th largest defense company in the world by Defense News, is the most active domestic player in the expanding space market. Its three defense and aerospace business arms — Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Corp. and Hanwha Systems — have each developed space businesses, and the company’s so-called Space Hub task force was formed under the wing of Hanwha Aerospace in March.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The Space Hub will orchestrate research, development and investments across a wide spectrum of business areas, including space launch vehicles, satellite-based communications, Earth observation (EO), and renewable energy,” the conglomerate said in a statement. “These efforts will play a pivotal role in helping Hanwha take the industry to new heights as a global leader in space.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a key step toward extending its space business, Hanwha Aerospace acquired a 30 percent stake in Satrec Initiative, a local company renowned for manufacturing high-end, small- and medium-satellite systems for Earth observation. Notably, Satrec is developing a 700-kilogram Earth-mapping satellite named SpaceEye-T. It’s designed to observe the Earth and provide imagery with resolution as high as 30 centimeters per pixel, with a goal to launch the satellite by early 2024.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hanwha Aerospace is also involved in developing liquid engines for the Korea Space Launch Vehicle, or KSLV, and other components like turbo pumps, valves and thrust vector control systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Through a technology transfer from the state-funded Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, the firm plans to develop laser inter-satellite links. The company plans to apply the technology to a constellation of 2,000 satellites it is building for low-Earth orbit deployment by 2030.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Well known as a missile and ammunition maker, Hanwha Corp. is keen to develop a solid-fuel propulsion system, having only been able to produce liquid-fuel systems. In July 2020, the South Korean government received U.S. consent to use the technology on space launch vehicles. That fuel offers greater mobility for missiles and rockets, but Washington had previously imposed restrictions on Seoul’s use of solid propellant out of concern it could provoke a regional arms race.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“With the removal of restrictions on rocket range and solid fuel, we’re not limited to developing a solid-fuel propulsion system anymore,” a Hanwha official told Defense News on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of discussing missile technology. “However, there has yet to be any requirement for solid-fuel rockets for the military. We believe the space defense program is just a start and would take time to be materialized.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hanwha Systems is involved in a state project to build high-resolution surveillance satellites, which would have civilian and military applications capable of monitoring North Korea and neighboring countries in near-real time. The company is focused on producing small, low-orbit satellites that weigh less than 100 kilograms.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That the satellites are lightweight allows for more to be loaded into one projectile and helps create a cluster of satellites that can be connected to provide an integrated communication system that can exchange observational information, according to the firm.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In its latest move to enhance space development capacity, Hanwha Systems spent $300 million to acquire an 8.81 percent <a href="https://www.c4isrnet.com/smr/2020/05/12/a-bankrupt-oneweb-could-get-some-help-from-the-defense-department/" target="_blank">stake in OneWeb</a>, a low-Earth orbit broadband venture located in London, England, and the U.S. state of Virginia.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, Korea Aerospace Industries (<a href="https://people.defensenews.com/top-100/" target="_blank">ranked 57th by Defense News</a>) pledged to invest $880 million over the next five years to expand its space business, including satellite production. The company hopes to launch a ground station and satellite imagery analysis service in a couple of years.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">KAI established a partnership with the Korea Advanced Institute and Science and Technology to build a space research center, where engineers will carry out projects on satellite software, spacecraft and other mobility vehicles.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Korean Air, the country’s flag carrier, is working on a military project designed to develop an orbital launch vehicle using a Boeing 747-400 airplane.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The development of air-launched projectiles, unaffected by weather and geographical requirements, is essential to attract the rapidly increasing demand for small satellite launches worldwide,” the company said in a statement.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">SEOUL — <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/unmanned/2020/11/19/south-korea-to-deploy-unmanned-k9-howitzer-in-2040/" target=_blank>Unmanned defense systems</a> and advanced weapons to counter drone threats dominated an arms exhibition held outside of Seoul, South Korea, this week.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the biennial<i> </i>DX Korea event, which ran Nov. 18-20, <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/top-100/2020/08/17/reform-efforts-in-south-korea-create-ecosystem-for-defense-industry-growth/" target=_blank>local defense companies</a> showcased their cutting-edge unmanned and counter-drone technologies.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hanwha Corporation, a leading developer of guided-missile technology and subsidiary of Hanwha Group, displayed its new family of laser weapons systems. The company unveiled two types of anti-drone laser weapons: one for installation on light tactical vehicles, and the other a laser-based anti-aircraft weapon gun in a container configuration. The latter, designated as Block I, can be modified to a Block II self-propelled system, but specifications were not disclosed. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hanwha Corporation is a partner in an anti-drone laser weapons development project led by the government’s Agency for Defense Development.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The laser-based anti-aircraft weapon is a new concept of armament to shoot down small aerial targets, including drones and multi-copter with a light source laser,” the company said in a news release. “Prototypes of the laser weapon variants are under development jointly with the ADD.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company also displayed anti-jamming equipment that can be fitted in tactical guided missiles as well as on military vehicles and naval vessels.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hanwha Systems — also an affiliate of Hanwha Group — displayed a mock-up of its personal air vehicle, Butterfly, under development with U.S. air taxi startup Overair. In partnership with Overair, Hanwha Systems plans to fully develop the electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing, or eVTOL, vehicle by 2040, with an eye toward military sales.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“With technologies to be accrued from the development of commercial eVTOL, we will push for developing a military variant capable of conducing multiple missions, including special operations, transport and assault,” the company said in a news release.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, Hyundai Rotem presented its HR-Sherpa unmanned ground vehicle designed to support infantry troops.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The six-wheel drive vehicle can move autonomously or via remote control to perform missions such as surveillance, medical support and chemical detection. It has a payload of 600 kilograms and a combat weight of 1,800 kilograms. It is equipped with airless tires and powered by a battery with an operating time of six hours when traveling at 5 kph.  </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">LIG Nex1 showcased the third version of its Sea Sword unmanned surface vessel for riverside defense, following other naval variants. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The vessel adopts a high-speed monohull design and is constructed with fiber-reinforced plastic. Equipped with a diesel engine and a waterjet propulsion system, the boat can sail at a maximum speed of 40 knots and has an operational endurance of up to eight hours at 15 knots.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An indigenously developed autonomous navigation system enables the vessel to carry out surveillance and reconnaissance missions based on a preprogrammed route.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hanwha group was ranked 32nd in <a href="https://people.defensenews.com/top-100/" target=_blank>Defense News’ list of the top 100 defense companies in the world</a>. LIG Nex1 was ranked 68th, while Hyundai Rotem was ranked 95th.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">SEOUL — Hanwha Defense is working on an unmanned variant of the South Korean-built K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer, according to the artillery manufacturer.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 155mm, 52-caliber K9 was developed in 1998 by the state-run Agency for Defense Development and Samsung Aerospace Industries, which was later renamed to Samsung Techwin and acquired by Hanwha in 2017.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">About 1,100 units have been in service with the South Korean Army and Marine Corps to counter the threat of North Korean artillery guns deployed along the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A spokesman for Hanwha Defense told Defense News that the K9A1, a <a href="https://www.c4isrnet.com/battlefield-tech/c2-comms/2020/11/13/hanwha-kongsberg-team-up-to-bolster-australias-k9-howitzers/" target=_blank>modified variant</a> of the original K9, has been delivering to the services since 2018 to replace aging K9 howitzers. Key improvements for the K9A1 standard include the upgrade of an automatic fire control system; the addition of inertial navigation/global positioning systems; an added thermal periscope for the driver; a fresh auxiliary power unit; and a rear camera.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The K9A1 features improved survivability and maneuverability with further upgrades being planned for adding more advanced technologies to the artillery,” Jeff Jeong, a senior manager for communications at Hanwha Defense, said Nov. 19.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next upgrade, to what’s been dubbed the K9A2, will include an unmanned turret with a fully automatic ammunition loading and handling system, which will increase the rate of fire and reduce the number of crew needed onboard, he added.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s expected the K9A2 will compete for the British Army’s Mobile Fires Program. The service is looking to acquire newer self-propelled howitzers in place of its aging fleet of AS90s.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another upgrade for unmanned maneuvers and remotely controlled autocannons is expected by 2040.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">State-run research to develop the unmanned variant is to start later this year, with the aim to deliver a completed study by the mid-2020s.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The K9 and its core technology have been exported to several countries, including Turkey, Poland, India, Finland, Norway and Estonia. The artillery was selected as the preferred supplier in September for the Australian Army’s Land 8116 Program ahead of a final contract in 2021.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Thunder has a maximum rate of fire of six rounds per minute and is capable of “multiple rounds simultaneous impact” firing. The maximum range of fire is about 40 kilometers with its rocket-assisted projectile. The K9 is powered by a German MTU MT 881 Ka-500 diesel engine, generating 1,000 horsepower when coupled with an Allison automatic transmission.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">SEOUL — Hanwha Defense Australia has announced a partnership with Kongsberg Defence Australia to integrate command, control, communication and computing technology into the K9 self-propelled howitzer and the K10 ammunition resupply vehicle.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The announcement came two months after the Australian branch of Hanwha Defense, a defense company in South Korea, was selected as the preferred supplier for Australia’s self-propelled howitzer acquisition project, code-named Land 8116 Phase 1. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under the project, the Australian Army is to acquire 30 155mm, 52-caliber K9 “Huntsman” howitzers and 15 K10 armored ammunition resupply vehicles, both of which are built by Hanwha.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The selection of KONGSBERG as a central part of our Land 8116 Phase 1 industry team will make a very important contribution to Hanwha’s capacity to deliver effective capability for the [Australian Defence Force] while fulfilling our extensive Australian Industry Capability commitments,” Richard Cho, managing director of Hanwha’s branch Down Under, said in a statement.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The partnership has already proven to be successful, he added, citing their recent involvement in Norway’s Vidar program for K9 and K10 procurement, and pointing to their delivery of K9s to Finland and Estonia.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under the partnership, Kongsberg is responsible for the integration of tactical communication systems and battle management systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Together with Hanwha Defence Australia, KONGSBERG is committed to the establishment of a sovereign industry capability to support the Australian Protected Mobile Fires capability throughout its service life,” said Joh Fry, general manager of Kongsberg Defence Australia. “We’ll continue to source as much C4 hardware as possible through Australian and New Zealand-based suppliers.” </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Developed by South Korea’s Agency for Defense Development and Samsung Techwin in 1998, the K9 Thunder is touted as one of the world’s most advanced self-propelled howitzers. It’s designed to provide effective and deep fire support across theaters. The howitzer is now manufactured by Hanwha Defense, a defense contractor of Hanwha Group that acquired Samsung Techwin in 2017.   </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main weapon is the 155mm, 52-caliber gun with a burst rate of fire of three rounds per 15 seconds, and a maximum rate of fire of six rounds a minute for three minutes. It has a firing range of 40 kilometers and is capable of “multiple rounds simultaneous impact” firing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On Nov. 13, South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration announced that the completion of deliveries of K9s to the South Korean military. The announcement came about two decades after the first K9 fleet was deployed on the western border islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An upgraded variant, the K9A1, is in production with improvements in fire control and power systems. DAPA and Hanwha Defense plan to continue to improve the K9′s capabilities to add automatic loading and unmanned maneuvering functions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The K9 has been exported to several countries, including Turkey, Poland, India, Norway and Estonia. About 1,700 units are in service around the world, according to Hanwha.</p>
