<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lockheed Martin on Monday <a href="https://news.lockheedmartin.com/2026-08-10-Lockheed-Martin-Announces-Strigo-TM-and-New-Product-Center-of-Missile-Technology-Solutions-to-Support-the-Arsenal-of-Freedom" target="_blank" rel="">announced</a> the launch of Strigo, a new line of modular <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/video/2026/08/10/big-moves-in-missile-production-amid-stockpile-reports-defense-dollars/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.militarytimes.com/video/2026/08/10/big-moves-in-missile-production-amid-stockpile-reports-defense-dollars/">missile</a> and sensor hardware, along with a dedicated product center designed to get weapons into the field faster. The line covers radio-frequency sensors, missile datalinks and missile seeker technologies, all <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/industry/techwatch/2026/08/07/rheinmetall-says-ramping-up-atacms-output-will-take-time-as-us-rebuilds-stocks/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.militarytimes.com/industry/techwatch/2026/08/07/rheinmetall-says-ramping-up-atacms-output-will-take-time-as-us-rebuilds-stocks/">built</a> on a common baseline architecture. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company said the shared architecture allows Strigo hardware to be reconfigured for different missions, including air defense, missile defense and air-to-surface strike. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lockheed calls the Strigo Product Center a storefront for “ready-now and near-ready” hardware that it said can be adapted to customer needs. The company said the modular approach also lowers life cycle costs, though it stopped short of citing dollar figures. Lockheed said it has made a $250 million internal investment in the product center to date. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The center was established less than two years ago and has already carried several concepts from initial design through testing, according to the release. The company said the center can move a concept from sketch to tested solution in months rather than years, allowing it to have parts on the shelf before the military even asks for them, in some cases.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stacy Kubicek, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Sensors and Global Sustainment, said in the release that the product center’s emphasis on early research allows the company to “test and deploy new solutions at unprecedented speed,” adding, “That’s how we turn ‘what if’ into ‘what’s next’ faster than ever before.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lockheed said technologies developed through the Strigo family played a role in developing the Increment 2 seeker package for the U.S. Army’s Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), which is <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/land/2025/10/13/army-accelerates-prsm-output-as-atacms-nears-sunset/" target="_blank" rel="">replacing the Army Tactical Missile System</a>. The seeker package adds a sensor in a missile’s nose that locates and tracks its target in the final phase of flight. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/03/18/lockheed-tests-upgraded-precision-strike-missile-designed-to-strike-ships/" target="_blank" rel="">Lockheed said it flew Increment 2 for the first time in March</a>, travelling 350-kilometers, or more than 217 miles, in a flight that gathered performance data. The company did not report an intercept.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Strigo is the latest in a string of announcements this year in which Lockheed has pitched itself as building weapons faster and cheaper. In March, the company opened a <a href="https://news.lockheedmartin.com/2026-03-31-Lockheed-Martin-Opens-Rapid-Fielding-Center,-Accelerating-Defense-Innovation-and-Production" target="_blank" rel="">Rapid Fielding Center</a> that builds prototypes and early production runs under one roof, part of a larger plan to build or upgrade factories. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In July, it introduced the <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/news/your-military/2026/07/20/lockheed-martin-announces-cheaper-patriot-interceptor-missile/" target="_blank" rel="">PAC-3 ACE</a><b>,</b> a Patriot interceptor it says will cost less than half as much as a PAC-3 MSE. These latest moves are pitched as supporting the Arsenal of Freedom, the Pentagon’s term for the munitions industrial base buildup.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lockheed’s release was short on details regarding the size, structure or location of the Strigo Product Center. It did not name any contracts, customers or delivery timelines beyond the PrSM reference.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has consolidated nearly all of the Pentagon’s drone and autonomous systems programs under a single new office that reports directly to his deputy and will oversee what Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell called “the most consequential battlefield innovation of this generation.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Unmanned Systems, or DRPM-UxS, will become “the single joint integrator for all unmanned and autonomous system programs” in the department, according to a <a href="https://media.defense.gov/2026/Jul/01/2003956955/-1/-1/1/ESTABLISHMENT-OF-THE-DIRECT-REPORTING-PORTFOLIO-MANAGER-FOR-UNMANNED-SYSTEMS.PDF" target="_blank" rel="">June 29 memo</a> the Pentagon <a href="https://www.war.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/4531728/department-of-war-establishes-direct-reporting-portfolio-manager-for-unmanned-s/" target="_blank" rel="">made public Wednesday</a>. Its director, yet to be named, will answer to Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Feinberg and oversee how the military develops, buys, fields and sustains unmanned systems in the air, on the ground and at sea.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The office’s reach is wide, including small drones in unmanned aircraft groups 1 through 3, unmanned boats, ground robots and counter-drone systems. It also covers the artificial intelligence and swarming software that guides them. Unmanned underwater vehicles will be handled jointly with the Pentagon’s submarine portfolio manager. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The office’s authority stops short of the Pentagon’s major defense acquisition programs, the big-ticket programs that already follow a separate approval process set in law. That means large airframes like the Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft and the Navy’s MQ-25 Stingray and MQ-4C Triton stay with the services, as does the Navy’s medium unmanned surface vessel.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two existing organizations are now moving under the new office. Joint Interagency Task Force 401, which has led the fight against small aerial drones, will expand to countering unmanned threats in every domain. The Defense Autonomous Warfare Group, the Pentagon’s effort to mass-produce cheap drones, becomes a subordinate element. Neither will see its staff or positions relocated, the memo notes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The new office inherits one of the largest spending increases in the Pentagon’s budget. <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/pentagon-congress/2026/04/21/pentagon-seeks-funds-for-golden-dome-drones-ai-in-largest-ever-budget-request/" target="_blank" rel="">The department’s latest budget request</a> set aside $53.6 billion for autonomous drone platforms, part of what Pentagon officials called an unprecedented commitment to drones and counter-drone systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Separately, the memo names the Defense Innovation Unit, the Pentagon’s link to commercial tech firms, as the single point of contact for the new portfolio.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The office holds significant power. It will act as the milestone decision authority for its programs, the official who decides whether a weapon advances through development, and it will take precedence on drone acquisition matters behind only Hegseth and Feinberg. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The office can act as the top buying official on its contracts, order the services to shift money between programs through the Pentagon comptroller, and stop any system from reaching the field.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The move also centralizes congressional engagement through the DRPM-UxS, requiring every part of the department to clear its drone-related plans with the office before contacting lawmakers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The memo says the office’s programs, jobs and people are exempt from the department’s hiring freezes, personnel reductions and reductions in force, and gives its chief the power to hire directly. The memo also lays out a staffing timeline. Once a director is named, hiring is to begin within 30 days, an organizational plan is due within 60 and a full list of the programs moving over is due within 90.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The reorganization is the latest step in Hegseth’s push to field weapons faster, a broader “speed to delivery” initiative that has already drawn warnings from the government’s top auditor.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A Government Accountability Office report <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/news/pentagon-congress/2026/07/01/pentagons-push-to-field-weapons-faster-risks-outrunning-its-own-oversight-watchdog-finds/" target="_blank" rel="">released Tuesday</a> found the Pentagon’s independent testing office, which Hegseth cut from 126 civilian jobs to 30 last year, now watches just 15 of about 110 active programs on one fast-track buying pathway, Defense News reported.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is the latest of several direct reporting portfolio managers Hegseth’s team has stood up to pull the department’s top priorities under Feinberg, and the widest in scope. What this all means for the drone programs already underway inside the services is not spelled out in the memo.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lockheed Martin has downed a Group 3 one-way attack drone for the first time using a Joint Air-to-Ground Missile, fired from its GRIZZLY containerized launcher. The test integrated the company’s Sanctum counter-unmanned aerial system battle manager with Fortem R-40 radars for detection, tracking and engagement.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://news.lockheedmartin.com/2026-06-03-Lockheed-Martin-Demonstrates-First-Ever-Sanctum-TM-C-UAS-Launch-from-GRIZZLY-TM-Containerized-Launcher" target="_blank" rel="">Announced June 3,</a> the live-fire demonstration paired the radars, Sanctum software and launcher to destroy the target at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, according to the company. Lockheed said it integrated the system and completed live-fire testing in under 45 days.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Fortem R-40 comes from a <a href="https://news.lockheedmartin.com/2026-04-22-Lockheed-Martin-Invests-25M-in-Fortem-Technologies-to-Meet-Urgent-Demand-for-Countering-UAS-Threats" target="_blank" rel="">counter-drone partnership</a> Lockheed strengthened in April, when it invested $25 million into the Utah-based firm to incorporate its radars and interceptors more tightly into the Sanctum system.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The test builds on <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/industry/techwatch/2026/03/24/lockheed-launches-hellfire-missile-from-10-foot-cargo-container/" target="_blank" rel="">GRIZZLY’s first live-fire in March</a>, when Lockheed fired a Hellfire missile from the same container system during a vertical-launch test at Yakima Training Center, Washington, six months after the program began. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The launcher is designed to fire both the Hellfire and JAGM and borrows design elements from Lockheed’s M299 launcher. Where March proved the launcher, the June test added the JAGM and a full detect-track-engage kill chain against a live Group 3 drone target, a class <a href="https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/IF12797" target="_blank" rel="">the Defense Department defines</a> as drones weighing up to 1,320 pounds and flying below 18,000 feet at under 250 knots.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Built on existing prototype architecture, GRIZZLY enables users to employ the ready-to-fire Sanctum C-UAS system without extensive infrastructure and logistical footprints. By integrating advanced sensor, battle management and missile technologies, Lockheed Martin delivers a decisive C-UAS capability that aligns with our customers’ needs for agile and distributed lethality,” the company said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The GRIZZLY holds up to eight missiles in a 10-foot shipping container, offers toolless reloading and can operate from ground sites or ships. Wireless links among the radars, battle manager and launcher allow for quick setup. Lockheed billed the system as a low-cost way to shield forward bases, key assets and vessels.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The maritime pitch tracks with Navy interest in containerized weapons that can ride on unmanned surface vessels to add firepower at sea, a demand signal Lockheed cited when it first showed the launcher in March.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The ability to integrate GRIZZLY’s proven launch architecture with Sanctum’s battle manager on an accelerated timeline demonstrates how Lockheed Martin is applying battlefield innovation and cross-program collaboration to rapidly deliver layered defense capabilities to the warfighter,” said Randy Crites, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Advanced Programs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This test demonstrates a rapid, low-cost and modular point-defense solution that can be deployed on land or maritime platforms within days,” added Paul Lemmo, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Sensors, Effectors and Mission Systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The demonstration comes as the Pentagon and allies push for better layered protection against growing drone threats. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air Force Special Operations Command is testing whether it can take its new Skyraider II apart, pack it inside a cargo jet and put it back together in the field, <a href="https://taskandpurpose.com/tech-tactics/air-force-skyraider-2026/" target="_blank" rel="">officials said this week at Special Operations Forces Week</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The single-engine, prop-driven OA-1K, a militarized version of the Air Tractor AT-802 crop duster, is built to give isolated special operations teams eyes overhead and firepower on call from rough dirt strips with little support.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It is essentially a Swiss Army Knife of airborne capability,” Lt. Col. Robert Wilson, AFSOC’s armed overwatch requirements branch chief, <a href="https://taskandpurpose.com/tech-tactics/air-force-skyraider-2026/" target="_blank" rel="">told reporters</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Rapid disassembly and reassembly means, in a matter of hours, the aircraft can be loaded into mobility aircraft like a C-5 or C-17 for worldwide deployment,” Wilson said in <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/news/565557/afsoc-unveils-oa-1k-skyraider-ii-rapid-deployment-capability-sof-week" target="_blank" rel="">an AFSOC release</a>. “With the OA-1K, ‘any place, any time, anywhere’ is not just a motto, but an actual capability.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lt. Gen. Mike Conley, AFSOC commander, added in the release that the OA-1K “offers a unique and modular solution for a wide range of operations, including armed overwatch, at a fraction of a cost of other platforms.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The cost case rests on platform consolidation. <a href="https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-24-106283.pdf" target="_blank" rel="">A 2023 Government Accountability Office report</a> noted SOCOM refers to the mix of close air support, strike and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flown over a single special operations mission as “the stack.” <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/news/565557/afsoc-unveils-oa-1k-skyraider-ii-rapid-deployment-capability-sof-week" target="_blank" rel="">AFSOC has pitched</a> the modular Skyraider II as a cheaper airframe that can do the work of many.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Air Force now flies 18 Skyraider IIs and expects “a handful more” by October, Wilson said. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The aircraft, named for the Vietnam-era A-1 Skyraider, currently operates out of Will Rogers Air National Guard Base, Oklahoma, and will eventually operate from Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The program of record is 75 aircraft, but the Pentagon has cut the funded total to 53. The same GAO report found that SOCOM had not justified the 75-aircraft fleet and urged a slowdown. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The cuts align with a broader Pentagon shift toward a potential high-end fight with China, where a slow, low-flying turboprop with no ejection seat is a hard sell.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The 75 quantity figure is the program record,” Wilson said. “I would say, as the capability sponsor, less than 75 is not desirable. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. Air Force and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. recently completed a successful <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/unmanned/2024/04/24/here-are-the-two-companies-creating-drone-wingmen-for-the-us-air-force/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.defensenews.com/unmanned/2024/04/24/here-are-the-two-companies-creating-drone-wingmen-for-the-us-air-force/">manned-unmanned</a> teamed demonstration between an F-22 Raptor and an MQ-20 Avenger unmanned aircraft, advancing the integration of autonomous systems into <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/air/2025/05/14/air-force-eyes-longer-range-for-f-47-as-combat-edge-in-pacific-theater/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.defensenews.com/air/2025/05/14/air-force-eyes-longer-range-for-f-47-as-combat-edge-in-pacific-theater/">tactical fighter</a> operations, according to a Feb. 23 <a href="https://www.ga-asi.com/ga-asi-and-usaf-demonstrate-manned-unmanned-teaming-with-f-22-and-mq-20-in-joint-autonomy-exercise" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.ga-asi.com/ga-asi-and-usaf-demonstrate-manned-unmanned-teaming-with-f-22-and-mq-20-in-joint-autonomy-exercise">company release</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The live-flight exercise, conducted at Edwards Air Force Base in California, featured a human-piloted <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/02/06/f-22s-pulled-from-super-bowl-flyover-due-to-operations-planner-says/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/02/06/f-22s-pulled-from-super-bowl-flyover-due-to-operations-planner-says/">F-22</a> issuing real-time commands to the MQ-20 via advanced autonomy software and a tactical data link. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Avenger <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/air/2025/08/28/first-flight-tests-begin-for-air-forces-drone-wingmen/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.defensenews.com/air/2025/08/28/first-flight-tests-begin-for-air-forces-drone-wingmen/">drone</a> responded by executing a range of mission tasks, including waypoint navigation, combat air patrol patterns and simulated engagement of airborne threats, functioning as a direct force extender for the manned platform, according to the release. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The demonstration leveraged government-provided reference autonomy software on the F-22 and GA-ASI’s Autonodyne Bashi Pilot Vehicle Interface aboard the MQ-20. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Onboard sensors enabled the unmanned aircraft to process information independently, coordinate maneuvers and exchange tactical messages with the Raptor in a continuous command loop between the two <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/air/2025/05/20/both-air-force-ccas-now-in-ground-testing-expected-to-fly-this-summer/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.defensenews.com/air/2025/05/20/both-air-force-ccas-now-in-ground-testing-expected-to-fly-this-summer/">aircraft</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We appreciate the flawless execution of this mission using the government’s advanced autonomous systems,” said General Atomics President David R. Alexander. “This demo featured the integration of mission elements and the ability of autonomy to utilize onboard sensors to make independent decisions and execute commands from the F-22.” </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The demo, meanwhile, builds on General Atomics’ accelerating timeline for the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On Feb. 12, the <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/air/2026/02/12/us-air-forces-cca-program-advances-with-auto-flying-software-integration/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.defensenews.com/air/2026/02/12/us-air-forces-cca-program-advances-with-auto-flying-software-integration/">Air Force announced</a> validation of the Autonomy Government Reference Architecture, or A-GRA, across multiple vendors. This included successful integration of Collins Aerospace’s Sidekick software on the General Atomics YFQ-42A CCA for its first semi-autonomous airborne mission. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The YFQ-42A, officially nicknamed “Dark Merlin” in a separate press release on Feb. 23, executed precise commands for more than four hours under ground operator control, validating reliable data exchange and autonomy execution that support advanced manned-unmanned teaming, such as the recent MQ-20/F-22 demo. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Edwards demonstration is the latest in a series of tests underscoring the Air Force’s priority on pairing fifth-generation fighters with autonomous unmanned aircraft. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Such teaming concepts aim to boost lethality, extend sensor reach and enhance survivability in contested environments by enabling pilots to delegate tactical tasks to drones while retaining command authority for complex decisions. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. Space Force is positioning its Space Warfighter Operational Readiness Domain, or SWORD, as a cornerstone for maintaining space superiority in an increasingly contested domain. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.defensenews.com/space/2025/03/13/space-force-teaming-with-air-force-on-joint-simulation-environment/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.defensenews.com/space/2025/03/13/space-force-teaming-with-air-force-on-joint-simulation-environment/">Col. Corey Klopstein</a>, program executive officer for Operational Test and Training Infrastructure and commander of System Delta 81, described the program’s focus on realism and readiness during a media roundtable at Space Industry Days in Los Angeles, California, on Friday.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">SWORD, the Space Force’s primary synthetic training environment, is a cloud-enabled, digital simulation platform designed to replicate contested space operations, including orbital dynamics, electronic warfare, cyber effects and adversary tactics. It allows guardians to train in realistic scenarios without relying solely on live, on-orbit assets or centralized facilities. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The platform has been demonstrated in large-scale exercises like Space Flag, supporting hundreds of guardians in realistic training, and is being scaled for broader enterprise use.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Klopstein stressed that SWORD is being developed to deliver the highest possible realism and adaptability. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Our intent is to develop SWORD and make it as realistic as possible and increase the fidelity as we work closely with our users to understand what they need … and increase that work with our contractors to increase the fidelity of SWORD,” he told reporters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That realism is achieved through rigorous validation. Digital models in the SWORD training environment are continuously being updated and refined by cross-checking against hardware-in-the-loop facilities (integrating real components into simulated environments) and live on-orbit assets. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It’s a constant back and forth in trying to increase the fidelity of your digital environment and make it as realistic as possible,” Klopstein said, stressing that the Space Force cannot rely on synthetic data alone.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Speed is equally critical. With adversary tactics evolving rapidly, Operational Test and Training Infrastructure is prioritizing rapid integration of new threats into SWORD. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Klopstein highlighted close coordination with intelligence elements and the National Space Intelligence Center to ensure timely updates to red threat emulations. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We’re working closely with our S2 and the Field COM S2s, as well as NSIC, to get the latest information that we can and leverage that information to provide updates to any red threat emulations within SWORD … to ensure the greatest accuracy possible,” he said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These efforts support a long-term vision of enterprise-wide access, transitioning SWORD to a cloud-based infrastructure so guardians can conduct realistic, distributed training from home stations rather than centralized facilities. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While current implementations are site-specific, Klopstein described the goal as creating “backyard ranges” so guardians can “train from their home station, using the synthetic environment as the source of the truth.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The SWORD program is supported by 10-12-month agile acquisition cycles to close near-term training gaps, alongside a planned fiscal 2027 cloud pathfinder, as reported by Air &amp; Space Forces Magazine and Breaking Defense.</p>
