{"id":10271,"date":"2018-05-01T13:02:04","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T13:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/01\/kratos-gets-green-light-to-market-potentially-armed-mako-loyal-wingman-drone-to-allies\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:31:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:31:33","slug":"kratos-gets-green-light-to-market-potentially-armed-mako-loyal-wingman-drone-to-allies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2018\/05\/01\/kratos-gets-green-light-to-market-potentially-armed-mako-loyal-wingman-drone-to-allies\/","title":{"rendered":"Kratos gets green light to market potentially-armed Mako \u2018loyal wingman\u2019 drone to allies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Trump Administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2018\/04\/17\/trumps-new-drone-defense-export-rules-expected-this-week\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">more relaxed stance on drone sales<\/a> is broadening the market for Kratos Defense and Security Solutions, which recently received permission to market its potentially-armed, jet-powered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2018\/03\/26\/check-out-this-new-video-with-the-air-forces-coolest-future-tech\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cloyal wingman\u201d Mako<\/a> to certain partner nations in Europe and the Asia-Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means that, for the first time, the San Diego-based defense manufacturer will be able to sell one of its unmanned aerial systems abroad \u2014 and its President and CEO Eric DeMarco said the first UAS deal could happen as early as this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve obviously been pushing this, but this came so suddenly and quickly. It\u2019s clear things are changing quickly,\u201d he told Defense News in a April 26 interview. \u201cWe see real opportunity very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump\u2019s much-anticipated drone export law changes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/04\/19\/trump-admin-rolls-out-new-rules-for-weapon-drone-sales-abroad\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">arrived on April 21<\/a>, about a month after the State Department approved the Mako for exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe decision went public in March, prior to the announcement of the drone export policy change, but it\u2019s easy to imagine that the decision [to permit Mako exports] was made given the upcoming policy change,\u201d said Michael Horowitz, a former Pentagon official and UAS expert with the University of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s new export rules pave the way for manufacturers to sell UAS through the direct commercial sales process. DeMarco is excited by that prospect for Mako, saying it would mean higher profit margins on international transactions than foreign military sales, an often slow government-to-government process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI could see by the end of this calendar year some orders,\u201d DeMarco said. \u201cBecause we got [the changes] in April. Many of the [potential] customers are the exact customers or tangentially the same customers that are buying our target drones. So we know the customer. We know their weapons systems. We know lots of important information relative to the marketing base.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s drone export policy push comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/12\/19\/heres-how-the-trump-administration-could-make-it-easier-to-sell-military-drones\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">months of rumors<\/a> about the proposed reforms, and industry and experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2018\/04\/23\/do-new-trump-arms-export-rules-live-up-to-the-hype\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">still have questions<\/a> about the significance of the changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unclassified text of the new policy appeared to do little to scale back the \u201cstrong presumption of denial\u201d that makes it difficult for companies to sell category-1 UAS capable of carrying 500-kilogram payloads for more than 300 kilometers, a description that pertains to most armed drones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s uncertain what that policy, or any new interpretation of it, means specifically for Mako sales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fact sheet for Mako lists a 350-pound internal payload, 500-pound external payload, and a 100-pound payload capacity for each wing-tip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An aircraft must be capable of carrying 500 kilograms (or about 1102 pounds) to be designated a category-1 UAS , so the Mako may already fit into a category that will make it easier to export than systems like the MQ-9 Reaper, Horowitz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kratos has experience selling its target drones internationally to countries such as the United Kingdom, Taiwan, South Korea and Sweden, DeMarco said. Several countries had already approached Kratos about Mako and other tactical drones, but execs have had to rebuff those conversations until now due to prior export restrictions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mako was designed as a \u2018loyal wingman\u2019 that could fly along manned fighters like the F-35, but it could also be deployed alone or as part of a group of drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It flies at subsonic speeds of up to .91 Mach speeds and has a maximum range of 1,400 nautical miles. The aircraft can carry a variety of payloads, including weapons, electronic warfare pods and defensive countermeasures like chaff and flares. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeMarco said the Asia-Pacific is a \u201cperfect\u201d customer base for the Mako, as the rail-launched aircraft can be operated over land or at sea. And the aircraft is relatively cheap \u2014 costing about $1 million for the air vehicle without any payloads, though the price would drop if part of a larger order, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kratos is under contract with Defense Innovation Unit Experimental, or DIUx, to test Mako and expects a follow-on contract for continued demonstrations in short order. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another one of Kratos\u2019 drones also had been approved for international marketing in April, but DeMarco said he could not disclose the model, or even whether the product was from the company\u2019s line of target or tactical drones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company is developing other tactical drones, including a loyal wingman type UAS called the Valkyrie for Air Force Research Laboratory\u2019s Low Cost Attritable Aircraft Technology program, as well as the swarming air vehicles for the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/uas\/2018\/04\/18\/dynetics-wins-38-million-contract-for-gremlins-drone-program\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency\u2019s Gremlins program<\/a>, which Kratos is making with prime contractor Dynetics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of those efforts are still in their early stages, but DeMarco is \u201chighly confident\u201d that the Pentagon is serious about transitioning them to programs of record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has stood up a facility in Oklahoma for tactical drone production and expects the first aircraft to roll off the line in 2019 \u2014 although DeMarco could not say which air vehicle that is or what potential customer will receive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are negotiating a strategic partnership with another small mid-[capacity] defense company that is also going to help us build aerostructures, because we have some other things that we can\u2019t talk too much about, that could hit very, very quickly,\u201d he said. \u201cSo they\u2019re going to be helping us. They\u2019re set up and ready to go.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHypothetically, in the second half of this year, if we receive an order for 500 drones that we\u2019ve got to deliver in the next two years, we need their help,\u201d he added. \u201cOklahoma won\u2019t be ready. \u2026 But there are some interesting things going on.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In anticipation for potential U.S. or international sales that could be on the horizon, Kratos is already engaged in site assessments for two other potential locations,
