{"id":10298,"date":"2020-05-28T18:07:09","date_gmt":"2020-05-28T18:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/28\/how-army-futures-command-plans-to-grow-ai-skills-in-the-service\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:34:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:34:20","slug":"how-army-futures-command-plans-to-grow-ai-skills-in-the-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/artificial-intelligence\/2020\/05\/28\/how-army-futures-command-plans-to-grow-ai-skills-in-the-service\/","title":{"rendered":"How Army Futures Command plans to grow soldiers\u2019 artificial intelligence skills"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2020\/05\/19\/dod-developing-best-practices-for-ai-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a> expected to form the backbone of the U.S. military in the coming decades, the Army is launching a trio of new efforts to ensure it doesn\u2019t get left behind, according to the head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2019\/10\/16\/army-futures-command-is-leading-a-cultural-shift-much-to-the-delight-of-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army Futures Command<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While speaking at an event Wednesday hosted by the Defense Writers Group, Gen. Mike Murray was asked about areas that need more attention as his command works to modernize the force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Murray pointed to a change in how the service does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/20\/as-multi-domain-operations-evolve-commanders-will-see-the-concept-at-all-levels\/\" target=\"_blank\">long-term planning<\/a>, as well as two personnel efforts that could pay off in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first is something Murray has dubbed \u201cTeam Ignite,\u201d which he described as \u201cad hoc, right now,\u201d with a hope to formalize the process in the future. In essence, this means bringing in the teams that write the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/defense-news-conference\/2019\/09\/04\/defending-the-pacific-requires-a-joint-force-concept\/\" target=\"_blank\">concept of operations<\/a> for the military and having them work next to the technologists driving research and development efforts so that everything is incorporated early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has occurred to me for a long time that when we prepare concepts about how we will fight in the future, they are usually not informed by scientists and what is potentially out there in terms of technology,\u201d Murray said. \u201cAnd when we invest in technologies, rarely do we consult the concept writers to understand what type of technology will fundamentally change the way we fight in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2020\/05\/27\/im-shorad-delayed-by-pandemic-but-first-unit-equip-date-remains-in-place\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMSHORAD.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">IM-SHORAD delayed by pandemic, but first unit equip date remains in place<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&quot;We&#039;re making adjustments as necessary, and then working with the companies to try and catch up,&quot; the head of Army acquisition said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Murray\u2019s vision, this means soon there will be \u201ca concept writer saying, \u2018If only I could [do something we can\u2019t do now], this would fundamentally change the way we would fight,\u2019 and a scientist or technologist saying, \u2018Well, actually we can, you know, another 10-15 years,\u2019 and then vice versa,\u201d he said. \u201cReally using that to drive where we\u2019re investing our science and technology dollars, so that in 10 or 15 years we actually can fundamentally change the way we\u2019re going to fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Futures Command chief also laid out two new efforts to seed understanding of AI throughout the force, saying that \u201ca key component of the Army moving more and more into the area of artificial intelligence is the talent that we\u2019re going to need in the formation to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Murray described a \u201drecently approved\u201d masters program to be run through Carnegie Mellon University, focusing on bringing in \u201cyoung officers, noncommissioned officers and warrant officers\u201d to teach them about artificial intelligence. The course features four to five months of actual learning in the classroom, followed by five or six months working for the Army\u2019s AI Task Force. After that, the officers are sent back the force, bringing with them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/it-networks\/2020\/05\/22\/the-pentagons-artificial-intelligence-hub-wants-unilateral-acquisition-power\/\" target=_blank>their AI experience<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, Murray is in the early stages of standing up what he described as a \u201csoftware factory\u201d to try and identify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/cultural-clash\/2019\/01\/28\/is-better-talent-management-the-key-to-government-attracting-silicon-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\">individual service members<\/a> who have some computer skills, pull them out of their normal rotations and give them training on \u201cbasic coding skills\u201d before sending them back to the force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to need a lot of these types of people. This is just [the] beginning, to seed the Army with the types of talent we\u2019re going to need in the future if we\u2019re going to take advantage of data, if we\u2019re going to take advantage of artificial intelligence in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gen.
