{"id":10307,"date":"2018-04-10T18:17:08","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T18:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/10\/marines-bringing-cyber-to-the-fight-commander-says\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:33:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:33:46","slug":"marines-bringing-cyber-to-the-fight-commander-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/home\/2018\/04\/10\/marines-bringing-cyber-to-the-fight-commander-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines bringing cyber to the fight, commander says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. \u2014 The Marine Corps is experimenting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/03\/27\/pushing-cyber-to-the-tip-of-the-spear\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">how it adds cyber warriors <\/a>at the tactical edge, to be better prepared for a modern fight, according to the chief of Marine Forces Cyberspace Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Marine Corps codifies how to use defensive cyberspace operations and related units within a Marine air-ground task force, it\u2019s experimenting with cyber warriors inside a Marine expeditionary unit, MarForCyber\u2019s Maj. Gen. Lori Reynolds said at the Sea-Air-Space Expo outside Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow do you put capability into a MEU that can be a responsive force in the cyber domain,\u201d Reynolds told reporters. \u201cThis is the first time we will have Marines out there, getting a feel for the ship and finding out, how do we do this? What tools would we take with us?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experimentation is both a test case and part of a longer-term project to incorporate cyber into tactical units. \u201cEventually what you want to do is as a MEU is out and about, forward deployed, we just want cyber to be a part of that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reynolds said she cannot incorporate cyber warriors fast enough to satisfy the demand from tactical units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are hungry for it,\u201d Reynolds said. \u201cPart of my growth is providing more capability to the MAGTF. Right now what I have is all I have to get my own force up and running. I can\u2019t move fast enough for them, so they\u2019re demanding more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year the Corps has added an O6-level cyber warfare group inside each Marine expeditionary force, the largest type of a Marine air-ground task force, part of larger growth within the Corps cyber force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps created a cyber career field earlier this year and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/dod\/marine-corps\/2018\/04\/05\/marines-cyber-forces-to-grow\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">requested 1,000 billets<\/a> related to cyber\/electronic warfare\/information operations in the most recent budget to be better postured to fight and win in an increasingly modern battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As it adds more offensive cyber operators from the signals intelligence community the idea is to also recruit the best defensive cyber
