{"id":10311,"date":"2018-12-30T14:57:47","date_gmt":"2018-12-30T14:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2018\/12\/30\/darpa-program-blending-robots-in-the-squad-to-find-and-destroy-threats\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:22:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:22:10","slug":"darpa-program-blending-robots-in-the-squad-to-find-and-destroy-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2018\/12\/30\/darpa-program-blending-robots-in-the-squad-to-find-and-destroy-threats\/","title":{"rendered":"DARPA program blending robots in the squad to find and destroy threats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency that invented stealth technology, the internet, and the M16 has its sights focused on enhancing how the infantry squad works on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/08\/drone-swarm-tactics-get-tryout-for-infantry-to-use-in-urban-battlespace\/\" target=_blank>battlefield with robots<\/a>, and advanced targeting and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/02\/28\/from-dolphins-to-plankton-darpa-program-turns-creatures-into-sensors\/\" target=_blank>sensing gear<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2018-11-30a\" target=_blank>Squad X program<\/a> saw its first week-long series of tests at Twentynine Palms, California, this past year. At that event, Marine squads used air and ground vehicles to detect physical, electromagnetic and cyber threats, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/03\/27\/darpa-to-use-artificial-intelligence-to-help-commanders-in-gray-zone-conflicts\/\" target=_blank>Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency\u2019s program manager for their Tactical Technology Office, Army Lt. Col. Phil Root said that the first experiment in the program demonstrated \u201cthe ability for the squad to communicate and collaborate, even while \u2018dancing on the edge of connectivity.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/31\/this-darpa-program-will-give-army-and-marine-aviators-a-robot-co-pilot\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Black-Hawk-cockpit.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This DARPA program will give Army and Marine aviators a robot co-pilot<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The autonomous capability will take the load off pilots so they can focus on mission tasks other than flying.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Squad X Core Technologies program, or SXCT, is an ongoing effort to develop novel technologies that would \u201cextend squad awareness and engagement capabilities without imposing physical and cognitive burdens,\u201d according to a DARPA press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They aim to speed the development of new, lightweight, integrated systems that provide infantry squads awareness, adaptability and flexibility in complex environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That effort is to enable dismounted soldiers and Marines to more intuitively understand and control their complex mission environments, according to Root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those efforts fit within wider work being done by the Close Combat Lethality Task Force, a group set up this past year to enhance close combat capabilities for infantry, special operations, scouts and some engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Root is also the program manager for Squad X Core Technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He laid out four key technical areas that the program is exploring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Precision Engagement: Precisely engage threats while maintaining compatibility with infantry weapon systems and without imposing weight or operational burdens that would negatively affect mission effectiveness. Capabilities of interest include distributed, non-line-of-sight targeting and guided munitions.<\/li><li>Non-Kinetic Engagement: Disrupt enemy command and control, communications and use of drones. Capabilities of interest include disaggregated electronic surveillance and coordinated effects from distributed platforms.<\/li><li>Squad Sensing: Detect potential threats at a squad-relevant operational pace. Capabilities of interest include multi-source data fusion and autonomous threat detection.<\/li><li>Squad Autonomy: Increase squad members\u2019 real-time knowledge of their own and teammates\u2019 locations in GPS-denied environments using embedded unmanned air and ground systems. Capabilities of interest include robust collaboration between humans and unmanned systems.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of those areas were previously explored in 2015 with DARPA\u2019s squad technology integration efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tools used to detect threats in the experiments were newer, lighter, versions of previous capabilities. (DARPA).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEach run, they learned a bit more on the systems and how they could support the operation,\u201d said Root. \u201cBy the end, they were using the unmanned ground and aerial systems to maximize the squad\u2019s combat power and allow a squad to complete a mission that normally would take a platoon to execute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The August event at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center was one of a number of experiments in communications, cyber, EW, loitering munitions and targeting that was conducted over the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, and CACI\u2019s BIT Systems are working for ways to enhance infantry capabilities using manned-unmanned teaming, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines testing Lockheed Martin\u2019s Augmented Spectral Situational Awareness, and Unaided Localization for Transformative Squads, known as the ASSAULTS system, used autonomous robots with sensor systems to detect enemy locations, allowing the Marines to target the enemy with a precision 40mm grenade before the enemy could detect their movement, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small units using CACI\u2019s BITS Electronic Attack Module were able to detect, locate, and attack specific threats in the radio frequency and cyber domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is all part of larger efforts to put more detection and fires at lower echelons in both the Army and Marine Corps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marines and soldiers will get to test run new ways to
