The Space Force probably didn\u2019t help itself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/05\/28\/watch-the-space-forces-new-stargazing-recruiting-ad\/\" target=_blank>when it released a recruiting ad earlier this year <\/a>that seemingly implied its members would literally be going to space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for anyone joining the Space Force to be an astronaut, Maj. Gen. John Shaw has some potentially bad news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it will happen,\u201d said Shaw during the AFWERX Engage Space event Sept. 29. \u201cBut I think it\u2019s a long way off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2019\/10\/03\/darpa-wants-a-robotic-satellite-mechanic-launched-by-2022\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spacebasedmd.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DARPA wants a robotic satellite mechanic launched by 2022<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">DARPA expects to have a new commercial partner lined up for the Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites spacecraft by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shaw would know. He\u2019s been a key member of the lean staff standing up both the Space Force and U.S. Space Command, serving simultaneously as commander of the former\u2019s Space Operations Command and the latter\u2019s Combined Force Space Component Command. While Shaw sees humans in orbit as part of the military\u2019s plans somewhere down the line, there are two big reasons why it\u2019s not likely to happen soon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst, space isn\u2019t really all that habitable for humans. We\u2019ve learned that since our early space days,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd the second is, we\u2019re getting darned good at this robotics thing in space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know, the best robots that humans have ever created are probably satellites \u2014 either ones that explore other planets or operated within our own Earth\/moon system. GPS satellites might be among those. They\u2019re incredible machines, and we\u2019re only getting better with machine learning and artificial intelligence. We\u2019re going to have an awful lot of automated and autonomous systems operating in Earth and lunar orbit and solar orbit in the days and years to come doing national security space activity,\u201d Shaw added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to satellites, the Space Force and the U.S. Air Force are investing in robotic capabilities that further preclude the need for humans in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most notable is the Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Spacecraft (RSGS) program being run by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. With RSGS, DARPA wants to develop a robotic arm that can be placed on a free flying spacecraft which can navigate up to satellites to conduct repairs, orbital adjustments, or even install new payloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/03\/05\/spacelogistics-teams-with-darpa-to-service-satellites-on-orbit\/\" target=_blank>DARPA is partnering with SpaceLogistics<\/a>, a Northrop Grumman subsidiary who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/02\/26\/is-this-the-beginning-of-on-orbit-satellite-servicing\/\" target=_blank>successfully began the first on orbit satellite life extension mission earlier this year.<\/a> SpaceLogistics will provide the spacecraft, DARPA will provide the arm. DARPA hopes to launch that robotically enhanced vehicle into orbit in late 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Closer to the ground, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2020\/09\/28\/the-air-forces-robot-pilot-returns-to-the-skies\/\" target=_blank>Air Force Research Laboratory is building ROBOpilot<\/a>, a robot that can fly planes. The robot completely replaces the need for human pilots\u2014it can press pedals to activate brakes, pull on the yoke to steer, adjust the throttle, and even read the dashboard instruments to see where it is and where it\u2019s going. Following a landing mishap that sidelined it for severla months, ROBOpilot returned to the skies for a 2.2 hour test flight Sept. 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space Force doesn\u2019t necessarily need humans in space to conduct its missions. Take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/05\/07\/here-are-a-few-of-the-experiments-hitching-a-ride-on-the-air-forces-secret-space-plane\/\" target=_blank>secretive X-37b space plane<\/a>, for instance. The unmanned vehicle is able to take off, carry host experiments into orbit, deploy satellites, and return to earth without humans on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even as the military makes it less and less imperative to send humans into space, Shaw believes that it\u2019s inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt some point, yes, we will be putting humans into space,&#8221; said Shaw. &#8220;They may be operating command centers somewhere in the lunar environment or someplace else that are continuing to operate an architecture that is largely perhaps autonomous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July, the Sierra Nevada Corporation announced it had received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/07\/16\/defense-innovation-unit-issues-contract-for-unmanned-orbital-outpost\/\" target=_blank>a study contract for prototype orbital outposts<\/a>\u2014autonomous, free flying vehicles in low Earth orbit that will facilitate space experiments and demonstrations. Missions will include hosting payloads, supporting space assembly and manufacturing, microgravity experimentation, logistics, training, testing and evaluations. The outposts are expected to be on orbit within 24 months of the award. SpaceNews later confirmed that two other companies\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/three-companies-studying-orbital-outpost-space-station-concepts-for-defense-department\/\" target=_blank>Nanoracks and Arkisys<\/a>\u2014have also received study contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the expectation is that these orbital outposts will be unmanned for now, DIU hasn\u2019t ruled out human occupants of future outposts. A DIU spokesperson told C4ISRNET in 2019 that the \u201cthe prototype will explore the military utility of exclusive DoD access to an unmanned orbital platform in order to perform experiments with no risk to human crew or other non-DOD payloads.\u201d However, DIU has also noted that it would be interested in securing a \u201chuman rating\u201d for future outposts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So even if humans on orbit are not part of the military\u2019s immediate plans, it remains a tantalizing possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt some point that will happen. I just don\u2019t know when,\u201d said Shaw. \u201cAnd it\u2019s anybody\u2019s guess to pick the year when that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the Space Force will probably send humans on orbital missions somewhere down the line, says Maj.
