And we continue to fly where we need to be, when we need to be there,\u201d Air Force Chief of Staff Dave Goldfein said at an Air Force Association event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a conversation we could have in the South China Sea, this is a conversation we could have anywhere in terms of international airspace. In the global commons, we continue to protect those global commons for everyone and we continue to operate where we need to operate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2019\/06\/20\/pentagon-issues-map-depicting-us-drone-shot-over-international-waters\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RQ-4.jpg_faf06a.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pentagon issues map depicting US drone shot over international waters<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Pentagon provided reporters a map indicating that the U.S. drone shot down by Iran was over international waters, challenging Iran\u2019s allegations that the drone was flying over Iran.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 19, Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guard shot down a U.S. Navy Broad Area Maritime Surveillance\u2014Demonstrator drone, a version of the RQ-4 Global Hawk used by the Air Force and a precursor to the Navy\u2019s MQ-4 Triton. BAMS-D, like other versions of the RQ-4, conducts its high-altitude surveillance missions without weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran has maintained that the RQ-4 had been flying inside its airspace \u2014 a claim that U.S. officials have repeatedly denied. On June 20, Lt. Gen. Joseph Guastella, head of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, presented a map showing the drone\u2019s location over international waters and told reporters that the aircraft had been operating at high altitude approximately 34 kilometers from Iran at the time it was attacked by Iranian surface-to-air missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis attack is an attempt to disrupt our ability to monitor the area following recent threats to international shipping and free flow of commerce. Iranian reports that this aircraft was shot down over Iran are categorically false,\u201d Guastella said. \u201cThe aircraft was over the Strait of Hormuz and fell into international waters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2019\/05\/24\/about-1000-us-troops-will-head-to-mideast-as-tensions-with-iran-grow\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635887942809088586-january-19-frontlines-11jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">About 1,000 US troops will head to Mideast as tensions with Iran grow<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Roughly 1,500 U.S. troops consisting of a Patriot missile battalion, intelligence aircraft, engineers and fighter pilots are heading to the Middle East as a \u201cprudent defensive measure\u201d against Iran.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The downing of the BAMS-D was also precipitated by a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/06\/16\/centcom-mq-9-reaper-shot-down-over-yemen-last-week\/\" target=_blank> number of attacks on less expensive MQ-9 Reaper drones<\/a>, which the U.S. Defense Department ties to Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Iranian and U.S. leaders have publicly stated that they contemplated actions that could have led to loss of life, which would have greatly escalated the dispute between the two nations. Iranian leaders have said they opted not to strike down a manned P-8 maritime plane operating near the RQ-4 that was shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2019\/06\/21\/trump-explains-why-he-called-off-strike-against-iran\/\" target=_blank>U.S. President Donald Trump also considered a strike <\/a>on Iranian missile and radar sites as retaliation for the RQ-4 attack, but he stopped the mission because the response \u2014 which could have killed as many as 150 people \u2014 was not proportionate to shooting down one unarmed drone, he said in a tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goldfein downplayed U.S.-Iran tension on Wednesday, saying he didn\u2019t see a \u201csignificant change\u201d in the Iranian military\u2019s capabilities and that his role as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff continues to be providing Trump with a range of military options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd so we continue to do that, to make sure that the options that are presented are executable and that he understands the implications.
