Is the cloud an answer?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cloud adoption within national security has greatly enhanced data storage capabilities and sped up long projects, officials said June 11 at the Amazon Web Services Public Sector Summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the best decisions that we made, and [it\u2019s] a decision that I think will stand as one of those that caused the greatest leap forward, was when we decided to go with elastic cloud computing,\u201d said Susan Gordon, principal deputy director of national intelligence at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees the entire Intelligence Community.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/c2-comms\/2019\/06\/10\/why-the-intel-community-is-at-an-inflection-point-with-data\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DCA3583.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why the intel community is at an inflection point with data<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Intelligence Community is entering a third inflection point, and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency is leading the way in adapting to it, says Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Sue Gordon.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IC, Gordon said, is using the cloud environment as the \u201cfoundation\u201d for its cybersecurity initiatives and to move its security data, which allows the IC to patch \u201cmore effectively.\u201d Beyond that, the cloud has also allowed the IC to do its job more efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re faster,\u201d Gordon said. \u201cWe can ask more questions and the cost of asking those questions is almost nothing. We take on much more complex problems than we did before. We are multi-disciplinary and multi-organizational because we\u2019re allowed to have the same foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/it-networks\/2019\/06\/12\/agencies-struggle-with-what-data-goes-to-the-cloud\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AWSPublicSector.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Agencies struggle with what data goes to the cloud<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">There&#039;s uncertainty in the government over how to approach data management. Here&#039;s where to start.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gordon also said that because of cloud computing, ODNI has learned how to input data for the IC\u2019s specific needs and how to move data around to different applications and mission uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve tackled some of our toughest community problems, at speed, at cost, because &#8230; we exist in a computing environment that allows us to,\u201d Gordon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ODNI is not alone in extolling the cloud\u2019s virtues. The Army\u2019s Program Analysis and Evaluation office has capitalized on the cloud\u2019s ability to grow and manage the changing demands of its users, a capability also known as scalability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, the Army is using the cloud to deliver differing options to commanders during the budgeting process, said PA&amp;E Director Major Gen. John Ferrari at the same event. Data engineers under Ferrari\u2019s command can see what happens across the program if the size of the Army increases or decreases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo if the leadership says, \u2018Hey, I want to make this change,\u2019 before [the cloud] it would take a lot of effort to do,\u201d Ferrari said. \u201cNow we can come back over and over again and we can iterate with them. And they go, \u2018Hey, if I don\u2019t buy this weapons system but I do this, what is the impact on our installations if I add $100 million a year to facilities renovation. What will that do?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ferrari said cloud computing fits into the Army\u2019s framework because of the service\u2019s heavy focus on data, and it can do the same for other organizations that integrate it properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a strong culture and history of manipulating data,\u201d Ferrari said. \u201cMy lesson learned is if you don\u2019t start with data and build outward, you\u2019re probably not going to succeed. \u2026 [If] you don\u2019t know how it fits into your business, you\u2019re not going to get full benefit of the cloud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenny Bowen, chief information officer of special access programs at the Department of Defense, explained during the panel that the cloud has increased agency delivery time of different tasks and helped identify where old processes slow his team down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve compressed our times of delivery from what was almost always, always measured in years, to averaging it in few short months,\u201d said Bowen. \u201cAnd when it\u2019s really, really critical we can do it in a few days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bowen cited one project his team received that had to be completed in less than six months. Without going into specific details, he said that his team completed the project in far less time because of their cloud capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the end of the day, what\u2019s the big takeaway? Thirteen days, more capable, more secure than we ever were,\u201d Bowen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the new capabilities that cloud computing has provided, Gordon said that the IC can\u2019t settle for just one cloud; instead, the community has realized its need for various configurations, such as a multiple cloud environment, elastic cloud, commercial cloud or hybrid cloud.
