The Pentagon\u2019s watchdog acknowledged July 13 that it\u2019s investigating multiple aspects of the DoD\u2019s controversial Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud contract, a contract potentially worth $10 billion over 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are reviewing the DoD\u2019s handing of the JEDI cloud acquisition, including the development of requirements and the request for proposal process,” the Department of Defense Office of the Inspector General said in a statement. \u201cIn addition, we are investigating whether current or former DoD officials committed misconduct relating to the JEDI acquisition, such as whether any had any conflicts of interest related to their involvement in the acquisition process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IG\u2019s review is \u201congoing\u201d and its team is making \u201csubstantial progress,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The inspector general\u2019s review comes just after several Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill have expressed concern over how the contract was handled by the department. At issue is whether the procurement process was competitive, and whether there was a conflict of interest between former Amazon Web Services employees who worked for the DoD at the time. Microsoft and AWS are the only remaining companies in the running for the contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe recognize the importance and time-sensitive nature of the issues, and we intend to complete our review as expeditiously as possible,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The announcement comes after new Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced his own review of the contract in early August. Esper\u2019s review comes shortly after the U.S. Court of Federal Claims ruled in favor of the Pentagon in a lawsuit filed by Oracle, which was eliminated from the competition earlier this year, alleging that the procurement process wasn\u2019t fair and detailed conflict of interest charges. A review by the Government Accountability Office last year also found no wrongdoing in the procurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IG\u2019s office said it has formed a \u201cmultidisciplinary team of auditors, investigators, and attorneys\u201d and that it will release a report on its findings and will report them to Esper, other DoD officials, lawmakers and will \u201cconsider\u201d releasing the report publicly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
