{"id":12468,"date":"2018-02-08T21:36:14","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T21:36:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/08\/marines-want-a-rugged-long-range-service-specific-drone\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:54:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:54:48","slug":"marines-want-a-rugged-long-range-service-specific-drone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/show-reporter\/2018\/02\/08\/marines-want-a-rugged-long-range-service-specific-drone\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines want a rugged, long-range, service-specific drone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is reevaluating its requirements for a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/uas\/2016\/10\/26\/uas-will-change-maneuver-capability-of-marines\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> large unmanned aerial vehicle capability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top leaders have long expressed the need for a group 4 or 5 UAS capability that is organic to Marine Air Ground Task Force, or MAGTF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to reporters following a keynote address at the West 2018 conference Feb. 7 in San Diego, California, Lt. Gen. Robert Walsh, commanding general of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command and Deputy Commandant for Combat Development and Integration, said the Marines need a unique capability that is different from what the joint force already has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main current group 4 and 5 UAS employed by the joint force include: the Air Force\u2019s MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper \u2014 both medium-altitude, long-range armed drones; the Air Force\u2019s RQ-4 Global Hawk \u2014 a long-range, high-altitude intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance asset; the Army\u2019s MQ-1C Gray Eagle \u2014 the service\u2019s variant of the Reaper; and the Navy\u2019s MQ-4C Triton \u2014 that branch\u2019s variant of the Global Hawk with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/uas\/2017\/11\/13\/navy-gets-first-new-triton-drone-for-ocean-surveillance\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">initial operational capability slated for 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/uas\/2017\/12\/14\/the-army-is-testing-if-it-wants-to-operate-combat-drones-remotely\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/isr-gray-eaglejpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Army is testing if it wants to operate combat drones remotely<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The pilot program assessing remote split operations for the Gray Eagle unmanned aircraft system is set to conclude in 2019.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given how coveted ISR is, most of these assets are employed at the theater level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/defensetech\/2018\/01\/29\/marine-corps-wants-reaper-drone-provide-overwatch-helmand.html\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Military.com reported<\/a>, the Marines are looking to lease MQ-9s from contractor General Atomics to provide units deploying to Afghanistan overwatch without having to coordinate with the Air Force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Walsh, one of the things the Marines are missing, especially from the landing helicopter assault ship and amphibious ready group marine expeditionary unit perspective, is a platform that can go out against a near-peer threat with long-range, airborne early warning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/uas\/2017\/04\/07\/drones-a-critical-component-for-marine-electronic-warfare-tactics\/\">electronic warfare capabilities<\/a> and ISR capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initial capabilities document they wrote was all encompassing, he added, to potentially include a logistics capability as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Marines started to work this with contractors, the answers they got back were that the platform as defined is big, broad and going to be expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walsh said they\u2019re trying to conduct a symposium with industry in the next month or two to refine the requirements before they roll out an analysis of alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m hearing from industry, \u2018You\u2019re asking for too much; it\u2019s going to cost you too much,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cSo, I\u2019m wondering why would I start the AoA if they\u2019re already telling me that.
