{"id":12889,"date":"2018-12-19T20:56:35","date_gmt":"2018-12-19T20:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2018\/12\/19\/why-darpa-thinks-air-assets-will-be-the-last-to-get-laser-weapons\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:54:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:54:18","slug":"why-darpa-thinks-air-assets-will-be-the-last-to-get-laser-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/electronic-warfare\/2018\/12\/19\/why-darpa-thinks-air-assets-will-be-the-last-to-get-laser-weapons\/","title":{"rendered":"Why DARPA thinks air assets will be the last to get laser weapons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2013 It\u2019s been a running joke inside the defense technology community for years: lasers are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/24\/new-pentagon-research-chief-is-working-on-lasers-ai-hypersonic-munitions-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\">weapons of the future<\/a> &#8230; and always will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while experts have long predicted laser systems, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/space-missile-defense\/2016\/08\/24\/dod-presses-on-in-pursuit-of-laser-weapons\/\" target=_blank>directed energy weapons<\/a>, are juuuust over the horizon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2016\/03\/15\/laser-weapons-ready-for-use-today-lockheed-executives-say\/\" target=_blank>more and more <\/a>technology experts have said they believe lasers are truly in the realm of the possible in the near-term for the Pentagon. Which raises the question: who gets them first?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking at the Washington Post earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/03\/01\/what-is-darpa-doing-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Walker,<\/a> director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, said, if possible, the Air Force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/farnborough\/2018\/07\/16\/whats-going-on-with-americas-next-fighter-designs\/\" target=\"_blank\">would love<\/a> to get directed energy up and running tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I never met a four-star general who didn\u2019t want a laser on his airplane,\u201d Walker said. \u201cIt would be really neat. That would be a really neat technology and capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa-digital-show-dailies\/2018\/10\/10\/the-army-wants-to-direct-energy-and-information-in-more-powerful-ways\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/kestrel-eye.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Army wants to direct energy and information in more powerful ways<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">High-power lasers and hypersonic missiles are among the priorities of the Army&#039;s Space and Missile Defense Command, according to the Technical Center&#039;s director.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But weight remains an issue, Walker warned. Quite simply, the technologies needed to support a laser weapon are heavy. \u201cAll this power generation and cooling adds up in terms of weight,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, \u201cI think airplanes will probably be the last, sort of, application of it, but I think we\u2019re very close to having a ship-based capability,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Navy\u2019s done <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/09\/17\/the-us-navy-is-going-to-need-a-bigger-boat-and-its-getting-ready-to-buy-one\/\" target=\"_blank\">some demonstrations<\/a> in that space. I think ground capability, lasers from the ground, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/03\/21\/us-army-successfully-demos-laser-weapon-on-stryker-in-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\">from trucks<\/a>, are being worked pretty heavily. And those will be closer than a laser on the airplane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One capability Walker is specifically excited about is solid-state fiber laser technology, in which researchers bundle together a group of small kilowatt fibers in order to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2018\/08\/07\/lockheed-dynetics-team-and-raytheon-locked-in-battle-to-build-100-kilowatt-laser-for-us-army\/\" target=_blank>produce a larger beam<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are a lot of advantages to doing that from an integration standpoint,\u201d Walker said. \u201cSo we\u2019re making pretty good progress on solid state fiber laser technology, being able to look at tens of kilowatts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked if that means Americans will one day see movie-like beams of energy flying from guns, Walker replied, \u201cIt\u2019s always easier in the movies, but certainly you can envision capabilities like that, and I think we\u2019ll be seeing some
