The places of people, vehicles and material are laid bare before the vastness of the heavens, waiting to be spotted by drone cameras or orbiting satellites. That same supremacy \u2014 and with it the vast swaths of intelligence it yields \u2014 means nothing if the battle moves underground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so DARPA, the Pentagon\u2019s blue skies projects wing, wants to start building the tools needed so troops fighting underground aren\u2019t kept in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, DARPA released a request for information on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbo.gov\/index?s=opportunity&#038;mode=form&#038;id=c34d14f31cadb1e5f51633961383e1e5&#038;tab=core&#038;_cview=0\">Dynamic Terrians\u201d<\/a> with a goal of figuring out how to make communications technologies work when the environment is caves or collapses rubble. From that request:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Figuring out how to communicate underground is a vital task on two fronts. The first, foregrounded in the request, is rescue work that place after earthquakes, in collapsed mines, in closed-off subway tunnels, or following other disasters. Having a reliable and immediate way to communicate, despite the barrier of, well, earth, is a necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s also a very real war-fighting aspect to this. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2017-11-21\">DAPRA notes<\/a> that Americans have fought in caves, tunnels and beneath cities in wars from \u201cWorld War II and Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan.\u201d Perhaps the most famous incident in recent memory is when the Pentagon tried to collapse the sky on an ISIS hideout, dropping the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/pentagons-largest-convention-bomb-is-orders-magnitude-smaller-than-nuke\">Massive Ordnance Air Blast<\/a> on top of a network of tunnels. Yet even designs for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/nuclear-bunker-buster\">bunker-busting nuclear weapons<\/a> could only penetrate a couple stories underground, (though hitting with earthquake-like force meant, like with most things nuclear, survival was as much about luck as anything else).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DARPA\u2019s request isn\u2019t about denying the underground environment, and it\u2019s also not about destroying it. Instead, DARPA\u2019s looking for navigation tools, communication tech and sensors that can work in degraded and unknown environments, ideally pieces of kit that could let infantry go from fields to caves or streets to subways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, the Pentagon writ large looked at the same, trying to suss out new tech for <a href=\"https:\/\/mco.arcpublishing.com\/(https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/pentagon-wants-technology-to-fight-wars-in-big-cities-and-underground).%20W\">wars in megacities and underground tunnels<\/a>.
