Nancy Norton<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norton accepted the directorship of DISA Feb. 1 and will also lead Joint Force Headquarters-DoD Information Networks, U.S. Cyber Command\u2019s global operational defense arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DISA oversees nearly $11 billion in defense technology programs and serves as the Defense Department\u2019s de facto IT agency.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outgoing Director Lt. Gen. Alan Lynn, who served as the director since July 2015 and is retiring from active duty with more than 38 years of service Feb. 2, reflected on DISA\u2019s mission for the Department of Defense and the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you really get to see the breadth of what DISA does for the nation \u2014 not just in DoD, but across the nation \u2014 it\u2019s awe-inspiring,\u201d he said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.disa.mil\/NewsandEvents\/2018\/Gen-Lynn-Retirement\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">DISA release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DISA has undergone a variety of reorganizations and internal changes under his tenure.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/disa\/2016\/09\/23\/disa-realigns-computing-and-storage-operations\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635657349536222038-disa-hq-alt-anglejpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DISA realigns computing and storage operations<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">DISA&#039;s realignment in computing and storage activities targets efficiencies, reduced costs and increased standardization.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think [from when I first served at DISA to now] we have a much sharper focus on the customer,\u201d he said. \u201cThe agency wasn\u2019t designed back then to support customers as well as it is now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three projects Lynn highlighted during his tenure include development of the DISA civilian workforce, evolution of DoD\u2019s mobility capabilities, and the creation of JFHQ-DoDIN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JFHQ-DoDIN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifthdomain.com\/dod\/cybercom\/2018\/01\/12\/defensive-cyber-continues-to-mature-still-lags-offensive-cyber\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">reached full operational capability this month<\/a> after being stood up three years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe members of Joint Force Headquarters\u2013DoDIN are the war fighters using the cybersecurity apparatus DISA has built to actually maneuver and change the way we\u2019re responding to the threat,\u201d Lynn said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re changing the landscape of how we do business and making sure we can protect ourselves better. If the bad guys come into our terrain, now we know who\u2019s supposed to be fighting them off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During an appearance before an AFCEA DC chapter-hosted lunch Jan. 11, Lynn referenced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifthdomain.com\/disa\/2018\/01\/16\/disa-preps-for-the-terabyte-of-death\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">the \u201cterabyte of death\u201d<\/a> and outlined the sophistication of cyber threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I first took over as director, we\u2019d get a 1-gig to 2-gig attack at the internet access point, and we thought, \u2018Ooh, that\u2019s a big deal.\u2019 And we did all the things we were supposed to do. Fast forward a couple years, now we get 600-gig attacks on the internet access points. Unique, different ways of attacking that we haven\u2019t thought of before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vice Adm.
