{"id":14225,"date":"2020-01-29T03:07:55","date_gmt":"2020-01-29T03:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2020\/01\/29\/the-air-forces-new-system-to-process-missile-warning-data\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:43:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:43:40","slug":"the-air-forces-new-system-to-process-missile-warning-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2020\/01\/29\/the-air-forces-new-system-to-process-missile-warning-data\/","title":{"rendered":"The Air Force\u2019s new system to process missile warning data"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon has been selected to build FORGE, a new system to collect and fuse data from the military\u2019s space-based missile warning sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force awarded Raytheon a five year, $197 million contract to build the Future Operationally Resilient Ground Evolution (FORGE) Mission Data Processing Application Framework, the company announced Jan. 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2019\/12\/17\/congress-wants-more-clarity-on-space-based-missile-warning\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/northrop-grumman-counter-hypersonics-defeating-invincible-v2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Congress wants more clarity on space-based missile warning<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">With multiple agencies and services developing overhead persistent infrared sensors in space for missile tracking, lawmakers want to see a plan on how the Department of Defense will integrate those efforts and avoid duplication.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new system will be able to ingest and fuse data from the Air Force\u2019s main missile warning satellite system, the Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) constellation, as well as its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2019\/10\/11\/new-missile-warning-satellites-pass-design-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">eventual replacement, Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared<\/a> (Next Gen OPIR). Both satellite systems use on-board sensors to detect the heat generated by a missile launch, giving the military a much needed heads up to any missile threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with BAE Systems and Booz Allen Hamilton, Raytheon was one of three companies selected through the Space Enterprise Consortium to build FORGE prototypes, with the understanding that the Air Force would eventually downselect to one contractor to build the system. According to Raytheon, the company built its prototype in less than a year by leveraging development work on several past programs, especially its Advanced Weather Integrated Processing System (AWIPS). The prototype is already capable of processing real data. The company credited DevSecOps with enabling them to move so quickly with the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were free to innovate in any way, shape or form,\u201d said Karen Casey, Raytheon\u2019s chief engineer on the program. \u201cWe could bring innovative technical solutions from programs and projects inside our company and we could bring innovative commercial solutions (in from) outside our company and we could do it as fast as wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Casey, the contract allows Raytheon officials to complete their work on FORGE and transition it into operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new system is being designed as an open architecture, meaning it will be able to incorporate data from other sensors. While prior military ground systems have been stovepiped \u2014 designed to work with one constellation but completely separated from any other constellations \u2014 FORGE will be open for future military satellites. Not only will the system presumably be able to work with other government satellites, it will also be able to work with civilian and environmental sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/c2-comms-battlefield-tech\/2019\/09\/25\/are-ground-systems-about-to-have-an-open-source-moment\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635671166719339417-sbirs-satellitejpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Are ground systems about to have an open source moment?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Chris Bogdan, Booz Allen\u2019s senior vice president in charge of military space activities, explains the company&#039;s approach to ground systems and its work on FORGE.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe whole philosophy of this framework is to incorporate data from external sources,\u201d Casey said. \u201cPotentially, we could support ground radars. Potentially, we could support environmental ground based radars like tsunami buoys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key to the prototype development was the company\u2019s work on AWIPS, said Casey, which was built to incorporate data regardless of sensor type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe priority is Next Gen OPIR. The priority is reaching back to legacy SBIRS,\u201d said Casey. \u201cBut yes, we\u2019re going to have a vision of being agnostic and generic. That\u2019s our goal, and where the customer decides to take that is up to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon leaders are excited about the possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. government\u2019s global satellite network produces a constant flood of data \u2014 petabytes and petabytes of it every day,\u201d said Dave Wajsgras, president of Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems, in a statement. \u201cThe Air Force wants to open that network up so they can use as much of that data as possible. That\u2019s a huge transformation not just for the service, but for the whole government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That open architecture also means third parties will be able to design applications for FORGE, allowing it to be repurposed for other missions. For example, the infrared sensor data produced by SBIRS and Next Gen OPIR to detect missile launches can also be used to track wildfires, monitor volcanic activity, and for a whole slew of unforeseen applications that could be used by first responders and researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe framework\u2019s going to allow these new uses of this data. We\u2019re going to be able to unlock it, effectively, and make it available for all these new uses,\u201d said Casey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company will allow third party application developers to work with them throughout the next five years, meaning those applications will be ready to go as soon as the system is operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
