We need our own core intelligence capability,\u201d said Space Force Vice Commander Lt. Gen. David Thompson.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/space\/2020\/02\/14\/does-the-space-force-need-a-guard-component-the-national-guard-says-yes\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19354453701432.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Does the Space Force need a Guard component? The National Guard says yes.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Some National Guard adjutant generals are already advocating for a Space National Guard to their local congressional delegations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally, both the military and intelligence community has seen space as a vantage from which to gather intelligence, but as the military switches to viewing it as a war fighting domain instead of a benign environment, the need for intelligence about space has increased. That includes knowing what objects are in space, where they are, what capabilities they have and what threat they pose to U.S. military and intelligence assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Thompson, that means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2019\/02\/19\/trump-signs-off-on-organizing-the-space-force-under-the-air-forcefor-now\/\" target=\"_blank\">the nascent Space Force <\/a>will need to build out its own intelligence capabilities as it grows increasingly independent of the United States Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need military, uniformed members of the Space Force, who understand deeply space intelligence,\u201d said the vice commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thompson also sees a need for the intelligence community to grow its own space intelligence capabilities to support the Space Force and United States Space Command. While Space Force leaders have spoken frequently about their close relationship with the intelligence agency most active in space, the National Reconnaissance Office, Thompson said the community\u2019s current space intelligence capabilities would not meet the need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe probably need to grow the overall intelligence community enterprise focus on space,\u201d said Thompson. \u201cIt has some organizations with tremendous technical and deep intelligence knowledge of space capabilities today, but it\u2019s probably too small for the task in front of it, and it has to help us build, no kidding, uniformed intelligence officers like we have who understand land combat, who understand maritime combat, who understand air combat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, the United States Space Command relies primarily on the National Space Defense Center and the National Air and Space Intelligence Center for space intelligence, although there have been calls for a new national space intelligence center to coordinate and develop space intelligence for the Space Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Gen. John E. Shaw, now commander of the Space Force\u2019s Space Operations Command, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2019\/09\/05\/why-the-pentagon-could-need-a-national-space-intelligence-center\/\" target=_blank>explained the rationale for such a center at the Intelligence and National Security Summit<\/a> Sept. 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are going to have to grow intelligence professionals for the space domain that support operational and foundational intelligence for a potential war that extends to space. That\u2019s going to be a major focus for us,\u201d he said. \u201cIn the near to mid-term a Space Force is probably going to leverage what\u2019s at [National Air and Space Intel Center] already.
