(Dustin Diaz\/Staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va., \u2015 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/03\/22\/the-future-of-nonlethal-laser-weapons-dazzling-lights-to-talking-plasma-balls\/\" target=\"_blank\">counter-drone laser<\/a> in use by the Army was on display here this week, giving Marines a glimpse at how they might melt drones soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Compact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/03\/22\/the-future-of-nonlethal-laser-weapons-dazzling-lights-to-talking-plasma-balls\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laser Weapon System<\/a>, or CLWS, is already part of the Army\u2019s Mobile Expeditionary High Energy Laser program. It\u2019s deployed on Stryker vehicle in Europe and has been used in field experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Boeing creation is a 5 kilowatt laser that can be used in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/air\/2017\/11\/07\/coming-in-2021-a-laser-weapon-for-fighter-jets\/\" target=\"_blank\">range of methods<\/a>, including counter-drone, counter-sniper, breaching obstacles, setting of unexploded ordnance, denying enemy landing zones and to defend ports or airfields.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/02\/28\/soldiers-in-europe-are-now-using-lasers-to-shoot-down-drones\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MEHEL-on-Stryker.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Soldiers in Europe are now using lasers to shoot down drones<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Soldiers in Europe now have Stryker-mounted lasers to shoot down drones. The lasers were tested in recent years at an annual fires event at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ron Dauk, program manager, Laser &amp; Electro-Optical Systems, spoke with Marine Corps Times about the system for Boeing. They have developed 2-, 5-, and 10 kilowatt versions. The first 2 kilowatt version was tested at the Army\u2019s annual Maneuver Fires Integrated Experiment in 2016. The next year the brought the 5 kilowatt now in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This coming year will be a 10 kilowatt version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laser can be mounted atop a vehicle, such as it was on the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle at the Oshkosh Defense booth. Or it can be put on a tripod and hooked to a generator to knock down threats at a medium-sized Forward Operating Base or at the perimeter of a larger installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JLTV configuration showcased at the Modern Day Marine military expo in Quantico, Virginia, was the first time they\u2019d put those two items together publicly, Dauk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"537\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CLWS-on-JLTV-Utility.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CLWS-on-JLTV-Utility.jpg.jpg 810w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CLWS-on-JLTV-Utility.jpg.jpg?resize=300,199 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CLWS-on-JLTV-Utility.jpg.jpg?resize=768,509 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Compact Laser Weapon System is a medium-range, low power device that soldiers and Marines can use to counter drones and other threats. (Boeing)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though they\u2019re doubling the power with the next version, that\u2019s likely the right range for now, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor CLWS, that product we think the 2- to 10- kilowwatt range is the optimal power level,\u201d Dauk said. \u201cIt\u2019s designed for short range, low cost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that power level, the CLWS has a \u201cdeep magazine\u201d and can strike down 10 or more targets in a matter of minutes, depending on the size of the configuration, such as a smaller drone swarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The power comes from the vehicle or generator, so there\u2019s no need to reload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s able to operate as long as there\u2019s gas in the tank,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing does have larger projects in the works. The Army wants a 100 kilowatt laser for more demanding projectiles such as mortars, artillery and missiles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boeing has delivered the 5 kw system
