{"id":14888,"date":"2022-02-09T17:03:43","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T17:03:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2022\/02\/09\/space-force-missile-warning-sensor-passes-environmental-test\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:53:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:53:52","slug":"space-force-missile-warning-sensor-passes-environmental-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/02\/09\/space-force-missile-warning-sensor-passes-environmental-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Space Force missile-warning sensor passes environmental test"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 One of the U.S. Space Force\u2019s next-generation missile warning sensor payloads just met a key testing milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Raytheon Technologies-developed sensor, which will fly on at least one of the first three Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared geostationary satellites, completed thermal vacuum testing in late January, according to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tests are meant to validate the system\u2019s performance in conditions similar to those it might experience on orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSpace is a dynamic environment. Ensuring our instruments are prepared for challenges is paramount to our success,\u201d Raytheon\u2019s President of Space and Command and Control for Raytheon Intelligence and Space Kristin Robertson said in a press release Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data from the tests will support future program milestones, including flight hardware manufacturing and payload delivery. It can also be fed into a simulation environment where the engineering team uses it for feedback into the design\u2019s performance and to demonstrate various functions, including launch and post-production support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis type of agile development can offer rapid and iterative design insights while modeling evolutionary payload upgrade capabilities to meet future threats and mission requirements,\u201d the press release notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next-Generation OPIR will replace the Space Force\u2019s current missile-warning constellation, the Space-Based Infrared System. The program\u2019s first phase, Block 0, includes three GEO satellites, developed by Lockheed Martin, and two Northrop Grumman-designed polar satellites. The first GEO space vehicle is scheduled to launch in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the GEO-based portion of the program, both Raytheon and a Northrop and Ball Aerospace team are developing sensor payloads. Each company\u2019s sensors will fly on at least one satellite and Lockheed will choose one of the payloads to integrate on the third GEO satellite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ball-Northrop team announced in December it had completed <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northropgrumman.com\/news\/releases\/northrop-grumman-completes-environmental-testing-for-next-gen-opir-geo-missile-warning-mission-payload-engineering-development-unit\" target=\"_blank\">a slate of environmental tests<\/a>, including thermal vacuum, for its engineering development unit and said it\u2019s on track to deliver the flight payload in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both teams\u2019 sensors passed critical design review this summer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/smr\/space-competition\/2021\/08\/24\/space-forces-next-generation-of-missile-warning-satellites-passes-major-design-milestone\/\" target=\"_blank\">along with Lockheed\u2019s satellite design<\/a>. The program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssc.spaceforce.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/2838945\/ssc-next-gen-opir-block-0-geo-program-completes-system-cdr\" target=\"_blank\">completed a full system
