{"id":14967,"date":"2016-03-04T17:48:28","date_gmt":"2016-03-04T17:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2016\/03\/04\/darpas-vertical-takeoff-x-plane-contract-goes-to-aurora\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:52:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:52:00","slug":"darpas-vertical-takeoff-x-plane-contract-goes-to-aurora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/intel-geoint\/isr\/2016\/03\/04\/darpas-vertical-takeoff-x-plane-contract-goes-to-aurora\/","title":{"rendered":"DARPA\u2019s vertical takeoff \u2018X-Plane\u2019 contract goes to Aurora"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2013 The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has selected Aurora Flight Sciences to build the so-called &#8220;X-Plane,&#8221; an unmanned aircraft that will take off and land vertically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DARPA awarded Aurora the prime contract for phase two of the agency&#8217;s Vertical Takeoff and Landing Experimental Plane, or VTOL X-Plane, program, the company announced March 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aurora team&#8217;s design, named LightningStrike, is an unmanned aircraft that features a Rolls-Royce AE 1107C turboshaft engine that will power three Honeywell generators, according to a company statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the agreement, Aurora will develop a technology demonstrator that can fly 50 percent faster than existing VTOL aircraft, the statement reads. Aurora will conduct the first flight tests of the technology demonstrator sometime around 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"270\"
