{"id":15110,"date":"2017-11-21T14:56:01","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T14:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2017\/11\/21\/tomahawks-get-faster-processors-better-flight-paths\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:54:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:54:57","slug":"tomahawks-get-faster-processors-better-flight-paths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/intel-geoint\/2017\/11\/21\/tomahawks-get-faster-processors-better-flight-paths\/","title":{"rendered":"Tomahawks get faster processors, better flight paths"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Powered by new processors that run 20 times faster, Navy missiles should now fly more accurately to their targets following a major upgrade and electronics enhancements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control System (TTWCS), in service since 2004, recently underwent improvements that include faster processors and increased cybersecurity controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most notably, planners in the Tomahawk Weapons System Program Office (PMA-280) ditched older proprietary processors in favor of state-of-the-art multicore X-86 multicore processors, which run 20 times faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat new equipment significantly increases system performance,\u201d said Capt. Mark Johnson, Tomahawk weapons system program manager. \u201cIt also allows us to make the product sustainable. Since this is [off-the-shelf] hardware, it\u2019s easily replaceable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy describes the Tomahawk Weapons System as its premier precision strike standoff weapon for attacking long range, medium range, and tactical targets. A subsonic cruise missile, the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile is used for deep land attack warfare. It launches from U. S. Navy surface ships and U.S. Navy and United Kingdom Royal Navy submarines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Ease of use<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The missiles\u2019 control system carries out a range of sophisticated tasks including precision targeting, route planning and in-flight retargeting. But, historically, these systems have been difficult to use. Planners say the system upgrades have streamlined the user interface considerably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has been significantly simplified to improve task workflow,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cIn the past you had a lot of windows open, you had a lot of data fields to fill out. Now you follow a color code, it pre-populates some of the blocks, it makes the whole experience quicker and reduces the chances of error.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than search the system, the user can fill in a single field and then follow a color-coded sequence of actions, each step leading sequentially to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make the process even easier, engineers consolidated two elements \u2013 the Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control and the Theater Mission Planning Center (TMPC) &#8211; into a single component, requiring just one computer instead of two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow they both can be accessed from the same workstation,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThe operator can log onto the system from a single console. He doesn\u2019t have to get up and move to another workstation. Combat is very busy, and we want to make that flow as easy as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combining these systems reduced the hardware footprint by 20 percent, a bonus for space-constrained vessels. \u201cThat is prime real estate that could be used for other systems,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Bolstering cyber defenses<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even as they simplified the end-user experience, planners sought to shore up the system\u2019s cyber defenses as well. They also sought to ensure the missile control capability was hardened against possible electronic attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we had before was a DoD-approved, cross-domain solution based on a really old operating system,\u201d said Chief Engineer Kappy Kaplan. \u201cPenetration tests couldn\u2019t get through that system, so we didn\u2019t feel that we were vulnerable. We wanted to be sure that we felt at least as secure when we phased in the new hardware.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To that end, the team employed two key cyber concepts: defense in depth, and zone-based security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDefense in depth is a layered approach to security. If you have to protect a network you build a series of defenses such that if once mechanism fails there is another in pace,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThe zone-based security divides what you are protecting into zones with different rules applied to different zones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to installing the system on new vessels, the Navy also has begun to roll out the weapons control system as a retrofit to existing vessels. This work presents a unique set of challenges, especially on older ships where space is tight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eager to get the new capabilities out to the fleet, planners implemented an accelerated methodology for testing. They have followed commercial trends such as agile software development, where partially-completed code is tested iteratively and corrected on the fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such early integration testing \u201chas allowed us to conduct tests earlier in the process. It has allowed us to identify deficiencies earlier, and to remediate those in the software,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cIt\u2019s all about how we get things to the fleet quicker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
