As contractors across the world flocked to the 2019 Association of the U.S. Army meeting in Washington this month to try to interest Army buyers in their latest robotic wares, across the globe Russian researchers announced further iterations of their Marker unmanned ground vehicle test platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest development for Marker is autonomous movement through urban terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUrban combat is becoming key to Russians&#8217; developing new weapons technologies, based largely on their military experience in Syria,\u201d said Samuel Bendett, an adviser at the Center for Naval Analyses. \u201cThere, Russian military and its allies are fighting in an increasingly urban and semi-urban environment, so any technology that saves soldiers&#8217; lives and makes their mission more effective will get Ministry of Defence&#8217;s attention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marker is developed by the Advanced Research Foundation, Russia\u2019s DARPA analog, which was also responsible for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/robotics\/2019\/08\/22\/russias-humanoid-robot-will-bring-jokes-to-space\/\" target=\"_blank\">FEDOR android <\/a>Russia deployed to the International Space Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, Russia demonstrated the Marker in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2019\/03\/04\/russias-new-robot-is-a-combat-platform-with-drone-scouts\/\" target=_blank>snowy fields<\/a>, showcasing how the robot\u2019s turret could follow the targeting sight of a human directing it. The Marker was a large part of Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2019\/07\/31\/is-this-russias-gateway-drone-to-better-armed-robots\/\" target=_blank>June 2019<\/a> exposition of military technology. While not itself a marketed product, showcasing a technology demonstrator is one way to indicate the future direction of military procurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It helps, too, that Marker gives Russia\u2019s military a way to learn from some fielded failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarker is probably benefiting from the lessons learned with Russians\u2019 testing large Uran-9 combat UGV, when this vehicle did not function as planned due to numerous issues that propped up in a&#8221;semi-urban&#8221; environment back in 2018,\u201d said Bendett. \u201cOne of the most important problems was the inability for the operator to guide the vehicle from afar, resulting in close \u2014 several hundred meters \u2014 proximity to Uran-9 as it attempted to \u201cfight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A robot that requires humans in close proximity to operate is hardly a lifesaving device. Hence the significance of the autonomous mode in Marker\u2019s recent tests, which can keep the robot in the loop but at some distance from the operator directing its movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With greater autonomy comes greater ease of shifting from \u201chuman-in-the-loop\u201d controls to \u201chuman-on-the-loop\u201d commands.
