That is being accelerated through multi-domain battle, in which future conflicts and adversaries will contest forces in all domains of war simultaneously.<br\/><br\/>Within this new construct, logistical support could be one of the greatest challenges and concerns related to multi-domain battle for ground forces in the future.<br\/><br\/>The Army Capabilities Integration Center, or ARCIC, conducted the Demand Reduction Summit on April 19 to explore initiatives and objectives to aid development of an eventual demand reduction strategy.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;The Army must reduce its logistics and sustainment footprint to succeed on a multi-domain battlefield,&#8221; Col. Stephanie Gradford, chief of ARCIC&#8217;s Sustainment Division, told reporters during a media roundtable. The eventual strategy, she said, will improve freedom of movement and action during sustainment operations, especially in austere environments.<br\/><br\/>Components of a solution include reduced logistics demand, organic power generation, autonomous resupply, additional medical capabilities capacity and extended reach, she added.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;As we talk about multi-domain battle, the area that concerns me the most is not necessarily the tactical fight, but it&#8217;s our ability to logistically support and sustain over vast distances and over long periods of time when our logistical support can be attributed by kinetic operations or disrupted by cyber operations working against us,&#8221; Paul Rogers, director of the Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/articles\/the-operating-environment-of-the-future\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/articles\/the-operating-environment-of-the-future\">said<\/a> at a March conference. &#8220;If we want independent operations, we have to ensure logistical operations in a near-peer fight.&#8221;<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within these new battlefield concepts and based upon adversary\u2019s denial goals, it is important to enable brigade combat teams to operate more independently. With logistical supply lines potentially being contested by adversaries, combined with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/articles\/the-army-fielded-15-years-worth-of-comms-equipment-now-what\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/articles\/the-army-fielded-15-years-worth-of-comms-equipment-now-what\">Army\u2019s own inherent sustainment woes<\/a>, one solution being examined is additive manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could allow the Army to reduce demand at the point of need and produce combat spares or other critical items near the point of need so as to not rely upon a supply chain that will be contested or extended, said Col. Mark Simerly, chief of capability development and integration at Combined Arms Support Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also examining how to reduce fuel consumption through alternative measures as well as leveraging micro grid technologies and making water from hydrogen to lessen the need for logistical resupply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simerly noted that participants at the summit focused on improved distribution, or distribution through autonomy. These initiatives are looking toward autonomous systems, semi-autonomous systems and man-machine teams to deliver logistics to forward deployed units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One such effort is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/articles\/army-assessing-emerging-technologies-to-meet-critical-gaps\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/articles\/army-assessing-emerging-technologies-to-meet-critical-gaps\">leader-follower technology<\/a>that allows for an unmanned ground vehicle to follow behind a manned lead vehicle and stay within a certain distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A follow on to leader-follower is something called autonomous convoy operations, Simerly said, which would be autonomous ground cargo vehicles that would be operating on the battlefield either in convoys or in single formations to deliver cargo in places where the Army wouldn\u2019t want to send manned vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are currently experimenting with this to see how it can be integrated with a manned platoon of cargo vehicles or an unmanned platoon of cargo vehicles. Simerly identified significant challenges echoed by many in the military sphere surrounding unmanned ground vehicles, namely that the sensors, while advanced in the commercial world on well mapped roads, are not advanced enough for off road and unfamiliar terrain. Sensors currently can\u2019t tell the difference between a toddler and a tumbleweed well, Simerly said, adding that this is a long-term capability that they want to develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the aerial side, he mentioned three tiers of autonomy with the first high end being a system with a payload capable of delivering 1,500 to 2,000 pounds over up to 115 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A medium capability would have a payload around 300-500 pounds that could resupply an infantry squad every third or fourth day with fuel, ammunition or water, and fly close to the surface of the earth, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third, the Army is looking at UAVs with a payload of 20-50 pounds that can resupply from a forward supply point directly to the point of need, injury or repair with an autonomous drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While some have discussed the need to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/articles\/a-force-in-flux-military-adjusts-to-emergent-domains-of-warfare\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/articles\/a-force-in-flux-military-adjusts-to-emergent-domains-of-warfare\">reevaluate force posture in new multi-domain battle scenarios<\/a>, Simerly said the Army is always reviewing force posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted that they are reevaluating force posture through the Army Prepositioned Stocks program, which prepositions stocks afloat and ashore around the globe as a means of reducing deployment response times of the expeditionary Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is being exercised in Europe today, he said, adding that the Army is rotating forces forward into Europe on an exercise basis, looking at how they combine the use of their APS, refining our understanding of what they might need to enable the movement of a capability in that theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar operations or exercises are underway in other parts of the world, especially in the Pacific, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official strategy demand reduction strategy is a 12-month process, Gradford said, with personnel from Army Training and Doctrine Command, Army G-4, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology, Army Materiel Command, Army Forces Command, Special Operations Command, Navy, Marines and Army Research Laboratory attending the April summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We just cast a wide net putting out what the initiative was, and people actually started reaching out to us to participate in the summit,&#8221; she said, adding they presented participants on an overview of multi-domain battle and discussed how they would develop a demand reduction strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gradford said they received a lot of feedback from the community, which she described as everyone that came together that has a stake in developing a demand reduction
