into the future of the fleet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/News-Stories\/Article\/2870855\/navcent-launches-saildrone-in-gulf-of-aqaba-for-exercise-digital-horizon\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Naval Forces Central Command<\/a> began operational testing Sunday of a sailboat-style drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sensor-packed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saildrone.com\/news\/what-is-saildrone-how-work\" target=\"_blank\">Saildrone Explorer<\/a> being tested in the Gulf of Aqaba off Jordan could provide the Navy with a relatively inexpensive way to expand its sightline, according to a Navy release announcing the testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drone is 23 feet long and 16 feet tall and relies on wind power to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also houses a sensor package powered by the sun, according to NAVCENT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vessel was built by the California-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saildrone.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Saildrone<\/a> company.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/03\/18\/us-navys-new-unmanned-plan-leaves-some-unconvinced-the-service-can-stop-screwing-up-tech\/\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other surface drones made by the company have gone out on yearlong data collection missions, and one made a \u201cno-handed\u201d voyage from San Francisco to Hawaii in 34 days back in 2013, according to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy hopes the Saildrone\u2019s machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities could provide the fleet with an affordable, zero-carbon tool for seeing over the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Coast Guard began testing Saildrone vessels in the fall of 2020 off Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Saildrone company, such vehicles are built for long missions at sea and are equipped with cameras, automated identification receivers and radar or infrared cameras for nocturnal capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Software onboard recognizes targets of interest and can report those targets back to end
