{"id":17127,"date":"2019-12-16T17:38:56","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T17:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2019\/12\/16\/five-brigades-chosen-to-wargame-with-potential-future-drones\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:34:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:34:06","slug":"five-brigades-chosen-to-wargame-with-potential-future-drones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2019\/12\/16\/five-brigades-chosen-to-wargame-with-potential-future-drones\/","title":{"rendered":"Five brigades chosen to wargame with potential future drones"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five brigade combat teams have been identified by Army Forces Command and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/08\/12\/four-takeaways-from-the-new-tradoc-commander\/\" target=_blank>Army Futures Command<\/a> to participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2018\/10\/29\/did-us-drones-swarm-a-russian-base-probably-not-but-that-capability-isnt-far-off\/\" target=_blank>future drone<\/a> tests this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers will evaluate new systems at the platoon-level while their units are at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/09\/26\/black-hawk-crash-at-fort-polk-kills-one-wounds-three\/\" target=_blank>Joint Readiness Training Center<\/a> at Fort Polk, Louisiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe intent is for each unit to evaluate their assigned system in a realistic, tough training environment,\u201d said Sarah Tate, a spokeswoman for the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/11\/22\/army-aviators-ask-for-more-comfort-less-workload-from-future-vertical-lift-teams\/\" target=_blank>Future Vertical Lift Cross-Functional Team<\/a>. The data gathered during the evaluation will inform the acquisition process, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The participating units are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.<\/li><li>3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.<\/li><li>1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.<\/li><li>1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.<\/li><li>1st Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt this time, we haven\u2019t identified which units will get what systems,\u201d Tate added. \u201cUnits will only have one system assigned to them. Soldiers will provide direct feedback to the Army on lessons learned and new Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures, which they develop while using the system during field training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is searching for a replacement for its current RQ-7 Shadow drone, which is launched from a trailer-mounted catapult to conduct reconnaissance, surveillance and battle damage assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/10\/29\/did-us-drones-swarm-a-russian-base-probably-not-but-that-capability-isnt-far-off\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/AP_18011522899049.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Did US drones swarm a Russian base? Probably not, but that capability isn\u2019t far off.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&quot;It is sometimes hard to tell which claims Russian officials believe and which are merely rhetoric,\u201d one observer of Russian defense policy said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This spring and summer, four companies were selected to test replacement drone aircraft that can operate independently from a runway, transport easily on CH-47 Chinooks and fly with a lower acoustic signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The four companies are Martin UAV, Textron\/AAI Corp., L3 Harris and Arcturus UAV. The actual demonstration period will last a minimum of one year due to the offset schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe anticipate the first prototype being ready for an April 2020 fielding to the 1st ABCT, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley,\u201d Tate said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These demonstration will serve as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/11\/22\/army-aviators-ask-for-more-comfort-less-workload-from-future-vertical-lift-teams\/\" target=_blank>soldier touchpoint<\/a>s\u201d for the acquisition process, according to Brig. Gen. Wally Rugen, director of the Future Vertical Lift Cross-Functional Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGaining soldier input early in the developmental process provides our cross functional team invaluable feedback needed in defining the best capabilities for our warfighters,&#8221; Rugen said in a prepared statement accompanying the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RQ-7 is a higher echelon asset. But the Army has also been testing smaller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/05\/31\/this-minidrone-can-transform-squad-level-reconnaissance\/\" target=_blank>\u201cBlack Hornet\u201d helicopter<\/a> drones for squads to use in short-range reconnaissance situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/07\/05\/these-soldiers-will-have-a-drone-in-their-pockets-during-their-afghanistan-deployment\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black Hornet drone deployed to Afghanistan <\/a>with soldiers from 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, this summer.
