{"id":17915,"date":"2017-08-31T14:37:02","date_gmt":"2017-08-31T14:37:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2017\/08\/31\/nist-dhs-sponsor-cyber-challenge-for-smart-cities\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:10:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:10:35","slug":"nist-dhs-sponsor-cyber-challenge-for-smart-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/cyber\/2017\/08\/31\/nist-dhs-sponsor-cyber-challenge-for-smart-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"NIST, DHS sponsor cyber challenge for \u2018smart cities\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Department of Homeland Security are sponsoring a cybersecurity challenge to develop secure technology for \u201csmart cities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/cyber-physical-systems-homepage\/smart-americaglobal-cities-challenge\">Global City Teams Challenge<\/a>, or GCTC, will focus on cybersecurity for networked systems that cities increasingly rely on to run essential services. \u201cThe more than 100 existing GCTC collaborations worldwide have allowed cities to use wireless sensors to test water mains for leaks, or to dim the streetlights when a sidewalk is empty of pedestrians,\u201d notes a NIST news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But these capabilities come with vulnerabilities that can be exploited by hackers, which is why NIST, and the Cyber Security Division of DHS\u2019s Science and Technology Directorate, are sponsoring this year\u2019s event, called the Smart and Secure Cities and Communities Challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe GCTC has been extremely successful in creating partnerships between cities and companies,\u201d said Chris Greer, director of NIST\u2019s Smart Grid and Cyber-Physical Systems Program. \u201cBut we need cybersecurity and trustworthiness in the projects themselves. So, we\u2019re taking on the new challenge of helping the teams converge on secure solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe also will be encouraging innovators from the cybersecurity industry and research communities \u2014 which have had limited connections to the smart city ecosystem in the past \u2014 to help teams understand how cybersecurity can be incorporated,\u201d said Douglas Maughan, director of DHS\u2019s Cyber Security Division. \u201cStrategically, communities should take time to understand the possible threats and then adjust their particular systems iteratively to deal with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new challenge was announced at the 2017 GCTC Expo in Washington, D.C., Aug.
