The Merlin Mark 2 helicopters will replace Sea Kings that have provided Airborne Surveillance and Control (ASaC) since 1982, according to a Ministry of Defense news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The assessment phase will be completed by 2016, followed by a manufacturing phase. &#8221;Crowsnest will form an integral part of future carrier operations and act as the Royal Navy&#8217;s eyes and ears, providing protection through early warning and surveillance,&#8221; said Air Vice-Marshal Julian Young, director of helicopters at the Ministry of Defense&#8217;s Defense Equipment and Support group. &#8221;We have accelerated our program delivery strategy in order to sustain the capability seamlessly through our Merlin Mk2 helicopters as the Sea King Mk7 fleet
