Defending the critical infrastructure of the United States is no small task to be sure<\/span>.\u00a0Our nation\u2019s competitiveness is heavily dependent on this infrastructure; and therefore, so is our prosperity.\u00a0So there is allot at stake.<\/span> Our nation\u2019s critical infrastructure is aged, highly distributed, very <\/span>complex and the sheer number of organizations\u00a0vendor\/suppliers\/operators <\/span>involved in it <\/span>is huge and in serious need of updating<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every four years the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)<\/span> releases a report card for America\u2019s infrastructure.\u00a0The last one was issued in 2013<\/a>, and\u00a0(link http:\/\/www.infrastructurereportcard.org\/a\/#p\/home<\/a>) \u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>to say it was ugly is an understatement. It should be noted that our power and communication infrastructure is not<\/u> included in this assessment. However, there are negative implications in those two areas that must be considered.\u00a0 Looking across the 16 areas examined, <\/span>The grade point average (GPA) <\/span>was D+ for the 16 areas examined. No area received an A and only one area that got a B (OK, a B-) and that was our infrastructure for solid waste. The other 15 areas were Cs and Ds \u2014 and scorecard doesn’t include power and communication. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would happen if you got a D+ GPA <\/span>on your latest job performance review?\u00a0 You w<\/span>Would you probably <\/span>be counselled out, put on a performance improvement plan\u00a0or just fired? Time has run out and s<\/span>Some experts have even come out and <\/span>called the country\u2019s critical infrastructure “beyond repair” with an estimated cost of\u00a0more than over <\/span>$3 trillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTE:<\/strong>\u00a0 In 2017 the next critical infrastructure report card will come out.\u00a0 One has to wonder what that will look like!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a\u00a0unique opportunity is at hand that has created an opportunity <\/span>to make giant strides in infrastructure operations and integrity. operational aspects and integrity aspects.\u00a0<\/span> Smart cities and smart infrastructures are aggressively growing around the world, and while they are not what anyone would call a mature offering, they are stable and fairly <\/span>beneficial.\u00a0The need for the United States to update its aging\/declining\/broken infrastructure creates a unique opportunity to <\/span>The U.S. could strategically move to a smart infrastructure strategy and solidify the country\u2019s competitiveness for decades to come.\u00a0If that happens, however, cybersecurity must not be an option.\u00a0 It must <\/span>be designed in from the start.\u00a0There is no doubt that the digitally controlled smart infrastructure would immediately become a target of cyberattacks.\u00a0 National security demands we build cyber security in now!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
