{"id":18724,"date":"2017-04-17T11:35:02","date_gmt":"2017-04-17T11:35:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2017\/04\/17\/microsoft-says-users-are-protected-from-alleged-nsa-malware\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:04:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:04:37","slug":"microsoft-says-users-are-protected-from-alleged-nsa-malware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/cyber\/2017\/04\/17\/microsoft-says-users-are-protected-from-alleged-nsa-malware\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft says users are protected from alleged NSA malware"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PARIS (AP) \u2014 Up-to-date Microsoft customers are safe from the purported National Security Agency spying tools dumped online, the software company said Saturday, tamping down fears that the digital arsenal was <\/p>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/04\/14\/leaked-nsa-malware-threatens-windows-users-around-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">poised to wreak havoc across the internet<\/a>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.technet.microsoft.com\/msrc\/2017\/04\/14\/protecting-customers-and-evaluating-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog post<\/a>, Microsoft Corp. security manager Phillip Misner said that the software giant had already built defenses against nine of the 12 tools disclosed by TheShadowBrokers, a mysterious group that has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/46ae8823e604434388fdc3339eb07251\/Snowden:-Exposure-of-alleged-NSA-tools-may-be-warning-to-US\" target=\"_blank\">repeatedly published NSA code<\/a>. The three others affected old, unsupported products.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Most of the exploits are already patched,&#8221; Misner said.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The post knocked back warnings from some researchers that the digital espionage toolkit made public by TheShadowBrokers took advantage of undisclosed vulnerabilities in Microsoft&#8217;s code. That would have been a potentially damaging development because such tools could swiftly be repurposed to strike across the company&#8217;s massive customer base.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those fears appear to have been prompted by experts using even slightly out-of-date versions of Windows in their labs. One of Microsoft&#8217;s fixes, also called a patch, was <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/security\/ms17-010.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">only released last month<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I missed the patch,&#8221; said British security architect Kevin Beaumont, jokingly adding, &#8220;I&#8217;m thinking about going to live in the woods now.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beaumont wasn&#8217;t alone. Matthew Hickey, of cybersecurity firm Hacker House, also ran the code against earlier versions of Windows on Friday. But he noted that many organizations put patches off, meaning &#8220;many servers will still be affected by these flaws.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone involved recommended keeping up with software updates.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We encourage customers to ensure their computers are up-to-date,&#8221; Misner
