{"id":19056,"date":"2018-10-26T20:20:14","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T20:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/26\/how-russia-china-and-iran-spread-propaganda-in-the-us\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:07:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:07:18","slug":"how-russia-china-and-iran-spread-propaganda-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/cyber\/2018\/10\/26\/how-russia-china-and-iran-spread-propaganda-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"How Russia, China and Iran spread propaganda in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facebook announced Oct. 26 that it has taken down 82 pages, groups and accounts originating in Iran that spread political propaganda targeting the United States and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 1 million users followed the fake pages, according to Facebook, and its discovery comes amid a flurry of allegations by U.S. officials regarding political propaganda from Iran, China and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are concerned about ongoing campaigns by Russia, China and other foreign actors, including Iran, to undermine confidence in democratic institutions and influence public sentiment and government policies,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dni.gov\/index.php\/newsroom\/press-releases\/item\/1915-joint-statement-from-the-odni-doj-fbi-and-dhs-combating-foreign-influence-in-u-s-elections\">read<\/a> an Oct. 19 joint statement from four U.S. government agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese activities also may seek to influence voter perceptions and decision-making in the 2018 and 2020 U.S. elections.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facebook\u2019s announcement is another example of propaganda by Iran, Russia and China that has targeted the political system of Western nations. Complicating a solution is the fact that the three countries have taken evolving approaches in their disinformation campaign targeting the U.S., according to experts and American officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The great majority of Iranian disinformation discovered by Facebook \u201cconsisted of divisive and polarizing content,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/dfrlab\/trolltracker-facebook-uncovers-iranian-influence-operation-d21c73cd71be\">said<\/a> a post by the Atlantic Council\u2019s Digital Forensic Research Lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples of the campaign include posts that promoted violence, distrust of the American political system and racial tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facebook\u2019s announcement is the second time the company has identified fake Iranian content. The social media giant also <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/08\/more-coordinated-inauthentic-behavior\/\">removed<\/a> more than 652 pages, accounts and groups for propaganda in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTheir behavior showed how much they had adapted from earlier operations, focusing more on social media than third-party websites and becoming much more engaging,\u201d wrote the Atlantic Council\u2019s Digital Forensic Research Lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts said the Iranian activity is similar to Russian tactics of spreading disinformation on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iran-based posts \u201cbehaved the same way the Russian operation did, posting engaging content, including positive messaging consistent with the communities they were trying to infiltrate,\u201d Ben Nimmo a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benimmo\/status\/1055868374989918208\">wrote<\/a> in a Twitter post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts and U.S. officials also said that Russia is trying to seep confidence in the U.S. political system by spreading misinformation and discord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, members of the Russia-backed Internet Research Agency \u201coperated social media pages and groups designed to attract U.S. audiences. These groups and pages, which addressed divisive U.S. political and social issues, falsely claimed to be controlled by U.S. activists,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/file\/1035477\/download\">said<\/a> a February indictment by special counsel Robert Mueller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top U.S. officials have contrasted Russian propaganda activity with Chinese efforts. There is no public evidence that China has undertaken a disinformation campaign on Facebook like Russia or Iran. Rather, U.S. officials say Beijing is trying to use traditional American media to shape public opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRussia\u2019s objectives here are to undermine the system. China\u2019s objectives are to manipulate the system,\u201d Chris Krebs, under secretary at Homeland Security, told reporters Oct. 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, China placed a four-page ad in the Iowa-based Des Moines Register in September that laid out risks of a trade war between Washington and Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Krebs compared disinformation today to historical propaganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIdeally, we get to a position where much like in the \u201970s and \u201980s when Pravda was again an instrument of the Kremlin and the USSR, it was immediately discounted because it was clearly a propaganda piece,\u201d Krebs told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to make sure that that level of awareness is out there that if you spot something you say, \u2018Yep, that\u2019s government
