They transferred data at higher rates by using an infrared laser for ground-to-ground comms, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/1610280\/marines-test-future-of-wireless-communications\/\" target=_blank>III MEF release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe FSO is technology which changes the dynamics of how Marines will support the demand for greater data throughout while not increasing the need for more radio frequency spectrum, an already constrained resource,\u201d said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jerome Foreman, with Headquarters Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laser method allows for more users on a single network, which means larger files, images and information can be transmitted more easily than on traditional networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/05\/04\/12-man-rifle-squads-including-a-squad-systems-operator-commandant-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-rifle-squad.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">12-man rifle squads, including a squad systems operator, commandant says<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">And all squad members will carry the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sgt. William Holt, with Marine Wing Communications Squadron 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, said though the system\u2019s technology sounds intimidating, it\u2019s an easier setup than many who participated thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the Marines heard \u2018free space optics\u2019 and \u2018lasers,\u2019 they got nervous about that. Then when they actually got behind the gear and were able to operate it, it was easier than expected. Now we know any Marine, of any rank, is able to get the gear up and running,\u201d Holt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Linda Thomas, a senior researcher with the Naval Research Lab, came to test the system in Okinawa partly because it is one of the \u201charshest, humid environments\u201d that has highly variable weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt can go from being nice and sunny to torrential downpours. We are looking at how the system operates and handles these conditions and how we can better fulfill the needs of the future Marine Corps,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system was tested for ground-to-ground comms but can be sued for ship-to-shore and air-to-ground, Foreman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other side of the globe, Marines with MAW Group 13 at Camp Douglas, Wisconsin, made an HF comm shot across more than half of the continental United States, more than 1,600 miles to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/1607711\/mag-13-makes-history-1600-mile-hf-shot\/\" target=_blank>3rd MAW release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HF communications has been the backbone of ground radio communications for decades but became a smaller portion of radio comm work with the advent of VHF, UHF and satellite communications systems that came into the force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-HF-longshot.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-HF-longshot.JPG.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-HF-longshot.JPG.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-HF-longshot.JPG.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-HF-longshot.JPG.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Marines with Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 13 work on communications equipment during Exercise Northern Lightning at Volk Field Counterland Training Center, Camp Douglas, Wis. And unlike satellite communications and other more sensitive systems, it\u2019s harder for the enemy to track or disrupt, especially since some comm systems are weather dependent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is key in allowing effective communication with the rear,\u201d said Vandiver. \u201cWe can instantly let them know what planes flew or didn&#8217;t fly, how many targets were destroyed and if there are any casualties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInternet and other advanced connections are great and very convenient,\u201d said Vandiver. \u201cHowever, when those fail, we will always have a means of communication to provide command and control points from the
