{"id":19641,"date":"2019-10-02T16:27:42","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T16:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2019\/10\/02\/the-federal-cloud-tools-program-wants-to-improve-timeliness\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:51:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:51:49","slug":"the-federal-cloud-tools-program-wants-to-improve-timeliness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/cyber\/2019\/10\/02\/the-federal-cloud-tools-program-wants-to-improve-timeliness\/","title":{"rendered":"The federal cloud tools program wants to improve timeliness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) received over 60 responses from industry on its recent challenge aimed at helping speed up the program\u2019s authorization process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FedRAMP acting Director Ashley Mahan, speaking Oct. 2 at the VMware Public Sector Innovation Summit, referenced an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/acquisition\/gsa\/2019\/07\/24\/can-industry-help-make-fedramp-security-evaluations-less-painful\/\">ideation challenge solicited<\/a> by the General Services Administration July 24 that sought help from industry in innovating the authorization process. Mahan said her organization, responsible for authorizing cloud-based tools for use in the federal government, is starting to go through the feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re taking that information, combing through it and we\u2019re looking to see how can we automate \u2026 we\u2019re looking at the whole end-to-end process here,\u201d said Mahan. \u201cThere\u2019s time that\u2019s spent with cloud service providers preparing for the FedRAMP authorization, ensuring they\u2019re implementing the security that we\u2019re requiring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mahan also said there\u2019s time spent going through \u201ctraditional government authorization\u201d and implementation of continuous monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking to see where we can make things simpler, where can we provide clearer guidance and where can we automate,\u201d Mahan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FedRAMP process is notorious slow and rigorous. It is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/it-networks\/cloud\/2019\/07\/17\/small-businesses-struggle-to-climb-the-fedramp\/\" target=_blank>significant and costly barrier<\/a> for smaller companies and start-ups to the government market. Both industry and government officials want an automated FedRAMP process to ease the challenges achieving authorization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are known for our rigor,\u201d Mahan said, adding that there are 1,200 individual test cases that assess cloud service providers cybersecurity. \u201cWe have to keep in mind that these cyberthreats are constantly evolving and so as organizations \u2026 we all have to be diligent in ensuring that we\u2019re maintain the security posture to minimize risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its ideation challenge announcement, GSA identified authorization challenges in the time the process took, cost, reciprocity and awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re
