First reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/google-is-helping-the-pentagon-build-ai-for-drones-1823464533\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Gizmodo<\/a>, the tech giant has launched a pilot program with the Department of Defense\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2018\/02\/13\/in-threat-hearing-dod-leaders-say-data-makes-an-attractive-target\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Project Maven<\/a> to develop AI that can quickly identify object classes from the incredibly large amount of footage collected by drones and other ISR assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/3\/6\/17086276\/google-ai-military-drone-analysis-pentagon-project-maven-tensorfow\">The Verge reported<\/a> Google is providing DoD with access to its TensorFlow software to create object recognition algorithms. Essentially a library of data, software engineers use TensorFlow to train their algorithms for a variety of machine learning and deep neural network research. The technology flags images for human review, and is for non-offensive uses only.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally developed by Google, TensorFlow is now used by wide-range of companies, from social media platforms like Snapchat and Twitter, to defense suppliers like Airbus Space and Defense. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/intel-geoint\/2018\/01\/23\/bob-work-has-an-idea-to-improve-artificial-intelligence\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635774819594675618-091015-frontlines07jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Bob Work has an idea to improve artificial intelligence<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Former Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work, the architect behind the Department of Defense\u2019s Third Offset strategy, predicted the Pentagon could soon establish an Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Article\/Article\/1254719\/project-maven-to-deploy-computer-algorithms-to-war-zone-by-years-end\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Project Maven<\/a>, officially known as the Algorithmic Warfare Cross Functional Team, in April 2017. The goal of the project was to deliver AI technologies to an active combat theater within six months after receiving funding. The project has achieved this goal, having already deployed AI technology to help U.S. troops in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thebulletin.org\/project-maven-brings-ai-fight-against-isis11374\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">fight against ISIS<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But work remains. Developing even more reliable algorithms to analyze the terabytes of information collected by drones requires a significant amount of time and effort. Training images must be categorized and labeled by analysts so algorithms can be properly trained to identify object classes. In examining the labor involved with executing a Project Maven type program, Greg Allen, an AI and national security expert, <a href=\"https:\/\/thebulletin.org\/project-maven-brings-ai-fight-against-isis11374\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">has noted<\/a> the categorization and labeling phase of automation can,
