{"id":20738,"date":"2020-06-25T21:17:07","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T21:17:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2020\/06\/25\/capella-space-will-share-synthetic-aperture-radar-imagery-with-nga\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:08:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:08:20","slug":"capella-space-will-share-synthetic-aperture-radar-imagery-with-nga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2020\/06\/25\/capella-space-will-share-synthetic-aperture-radar-imagery-with-nga\/","title":{"rendered":"Capella Space will share synthetic aperture radar imagery with NGA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency will have access to new synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data thanks to a new research agreement with Capella Space<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), NGA researchers will be able to access the company\u2019s SAR data and analytics, while Capella will be able to work with NGA researchers \u201cfor deeper insight into problems,\u201d according to the company\u2019s June 25 press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SAR creates imagery using radar, giving it different capabilities than traditional electro-optical satellite imagery. In addition to being able to produce images regardless of inclement weather or poor lighting conditions, SAR can provide data on material properties, moisture content, precise movements and elevation. Capella has previously stated that its satellites will be able to collect sub-0.5 meter imagery, meaning it can be used to identify types of aircraft or vehicles at ground level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is an exciting partnership that has the potential to yield new intelligence opportunities. Capella\u2019s high temporal resolution SAR imagery will give intelligence professionals key insight and strategic advantage,\u201d said Jarrett Adrian, NGA\u2019s Principal Investigator for this CRADA, in a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CRADA is just the latest deal Capella Space has secured as it expands its footprint in the U.S. intelligence and defense communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2019\/11\/25\/the-air-force-may-have-found-new-imagery-it-needs-at-a-pitch-day\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Air Force awarded Capella Space a contract<\/a> to use its SAR for virtual reality software, missile defense and developing predictive intelligence to foresee foreign threats. One month later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2019\/12\/11\/nro-looks-to-add-new-types-of-commercial-imagery\/\" target=_blank>the National Reconnaissance Office issued the company a commercial study contract<\/a> as the agency looks to diversify its commercial imagery intake. And in May, the company announced that it had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/space\/2020\/05\/13\/navy-inks-deal-for-synthetic-aperture-radar-imagery\/\" target=_blank>signed a deal with the U.S. Navy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite securing a number of deals for its SAR imagery, the company has yet to begin launching it\u2019s new 36 satellite constellation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2019\/08\/23\/will-on-demand-tasking-give-this-company-an-edge\/\" target=_blank>In an August interview with C4ISRNET<\/a>, executives said they hoped to begin launching satellites by the end of the year. However, when Capella Space released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/01\/24\/a-new-satellite-to-produce-imagery-for-the-intelligence-community\/\" target=_blank>design for its new satellites in January<\/a>, it had pushed back that launch until March. In it\u2019s latest announcement, the company simply stated that it\u2019s first launch is \u201con the near horizon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, the company says it will collect imagery by flying its synthetic radar on a specially outfitted airplane.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Under a new Cooperative Research and Development
