{"id":21007,"date":"2022-04-04T19:57:50","date_gmt":"2022-04-04T19:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2022\/04\/04\/army-eyes-thousands-of-ivas-systems-with-fy23-budget\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:04:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:04:21","slug":"army-eyes-thousands-of-ivas-systems-with-fy23-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks-battlefield-tech\/2022\/04\/04\/army-eyes-thousands-of-ivas-systems-with-fy23-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"Army eyes thousands of IVAS systems with FY23 budget"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army in fiscal year 2023 is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars for its Integrated Visual Augmentation System, a do-it-all headset that has faced challenges in the field and in the halls of Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some $400 million is marked for procurement, Director of Force Development <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/03\/08\/recent-guard-uh-60-crashes-do-not-indicate-systemic-problem-army-official-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brig. Gen. Michael McCurry<\/a> told reporters March 29, enough for \u201cjust over 7,000 IVAS systems for\u201d three brigade combat teams, pending successful testing. The sum is about half of a prior request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also eyeing a newer version of the goggle using millions in research, development, testing and evaluation money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re looking at there is to procure 270 of the next prototype,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/20\/from-growing-pilots-to-shifting-training-while-also-meeting-growing-demands-army-aviation-has-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\">McCurry said<\/a>. \u201cWhat we call the \u20181.2 version,\u2019 which is the next version going forward on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Integrated Visual Augmentation System, a Microsoft HoloLens tailored specifically for the military, is meant to change how soldiers train, communicate and fight. The final product is expected to provide a wealth of new capabilities: a futuristic heads-up display, vision enhancements, smart crosshairs, 360-degree imaging and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting there hasn\u2019t been easy, though. As is often the case with cutting-edge gear, \u201cwe run into issues with integrating new technologies into something that is hardened for combat,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks\/2022\/03\/28\/cuts-to-armys-ivas-were-good-oversight-by-congress-says-acquisitions-boss\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army acquisition chief<\/a> Doug Bush said in March. \u201cIt\u2019s not a small task.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress withheld $349 million for IVAS procurement in its fiscal year 2022 spending bundle \u2014 far from the first time appropriators docked the program. Lawmakers also asked for updates, including from the Program Executive Office Soldier, an Army agency that prototypes, procures and fields things like weapons and armor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army on March 15 said it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/254732?dmd&#038;linkId=156933648\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ccontinues to work with Microsoft,\u201d<\/a> which was awarded a multibillion-dollar contract in 2021. PEO Soldier in an October 2021 announcement similarly said the service \u201cis fully committed to its partnership with Microsoft to advance specific technologies to meet operational requirements and maximize warfighter impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key operational test is scheduled for May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2022\/03\/31\/proposed-us-army-budget-funds-third-multi-domain-task-force\/\" target=\"_blank\">budget request<\/a> for fiscal year 2023 totaled $178 billion, documents show, a 1.7% tick up from its $175 billion fiscal year 2022 enacted funding. The request is level with its fiscal year 2021 enacted budget, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The slight increase compared to fiscal year 2022 lets the Army \u201cmaintain the readiness, continue the transformation of our modernization efforts as well as take care of our people,\u201d Maj. Gen. Mark Bennett, director of the Army budget, said March 25, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/03\/28\/us-armys-178-billion-fy23-budget-protects-modernization-cuts-end-strength\/\" target=\"_blank\">Defense
