The Towed Airborne Lift of Naval Systems (TALONS) uses a tether and parachute to hover behind a towing vessel.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The TALONS prototype started out from its \u2018nest\u2019 installed on the back of the ACTUV vehicle,&#8221; according to a DARPA news release. &#8220;It then expanded its parachute and rose to an altitude of 1,000 feet, where it tested its on-board sensors and communications equipment. Once the test was complete, the prototype reeled itself in back to the nest. The entire process took place as the ACTUV vehicle maneuvered at operationally realistic speeds.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=4d8df707-621b-47f7-8092-5ce99e062cd4\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">DARPA&#8217;s ACTUV program has designed, developed and constructed an entirely new class of ocean-going vessel, one intended to traverse thousands of kilometers over the open seas for months at a time, all without a single crew member aboard.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;While aloft, TALONS demonstrated significant improvements to the range of the sensors and radios it carried compared to mounting them directly on a surface vessel,&#8221; DARPA said. &#8220;For example, TALONS\u2019 surface-track radar extended its range by 500 percent \u2014 six times \u2014 compared to its range at sea level. Its electro-optical\/infrared scanner doubled its observed discrimination range. The TALONS team plugged in a commercial handheld omnidirectional radio; that radio\u2019s range more than tripled.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ACTUV project is scheduled to
