But if the company intends to stay relevant, it needs to develop new capabilities \u2015 and its top technology expert has identified the key pots of money in which he wants to invest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keoki Jackson, Lockheed\u2019s chief technology officer, laid out to reporters the \u201cfoundational\u201d technologies in which his firm will be investing over the next two to three decades when he spoke at an Oct. 11 roundtable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technologies fall into three broad categories, with the first being what Jackson called \u201cstrategic technology thread areas,\u201d areas that \u201cgo across pretty much anything Lockheed Martin will do, all these domains whether from undersea to outer space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Included in that pot are autonomy, directed energy, signal processing and communications, sensor technology and exploitation, and advanced cybersecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usable directed energy weapons, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2016\/03\/15\/laser-weapons-ready-for-use-today-lockheed-executives-say\/\">long described in defense circles<\/a> as just around the corner, are truly at a \u201ctipping point\u201d, according to Jackson, who said he is confident the company\u2019s 60-kilowatt system, which has been used on a Stryker vehicle, can be scaled up to 150 kilowatts or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2017\/03\/16\/us-army-gets-world-record-setting-60-kw-laser\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/lockheed-60kw-laser-truck.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army gets world record-setting 60-kW laser<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Army is taking delivery of a 60 kilowatt-class laser from Lockheed Martin as the company wraps up demonstrations of the capability.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although not initially part of his discussion, Jackson later acknowledged the company is working on hypersonic technology as well. \u201cI do believe we\u2019re on the verge of a revolution in hypersonics, and we are certainly committed to supporting our customers in their quest for high-speed strike capabilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second pot involves enabling technologies \u2015 areas where there is a \u201chuge amount of investment\u201d going on in universities and the commercial tech sector, Jackson explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are areas where we look not just to develop specific capabilities in-house, but really to leverage these huge investments that are going on in the commercial world that are really advancing,\u201d Jackson said, noting investments in these areas can be found anywhere from the financial sector to the agricultural world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That pot includes data analytics and big data, advanced electronics, and advanced materials and manufacturing. This is where Lockheed Martin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2017\/03\/09\/skunkworks-sikorsky-and-skinny-jeans-lockheed-goes-to-south-by-southwest\/\">LM venture fund<\/a>, a roughly $100 million pot of money for investing in outside tech companies, most comes into play. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, there is the third pot, which is made up of emerging technologies that \u201care kind of longer range, they are iffier bets, they are higher risk.\u201d Among those noted by Jackson in this pot were quantum computing, communications and cryptology, as well as synthetic biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re in an age today where you can effectively design a living molecular machine, you can compile it using a set of tools that is very much like a program compiler in a programming language, and then you can auto-generate a set of DNA sequences,\u201d Jackson said of the synthetic biology piece. \u201cYou can create molecular machines to build almost anything at that molecular level with molecular precision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while predicting biological technology is going to \u201crevolutionize\u201d the aerospace world, Jackson admitted he\u2018s most excited about the potential from quantum technologies, particularly the potential impact on information sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI believe the next leap in information technology, computing and sensing is going to come out of the quantum world. It is going to enable us to solve computational problems that we just cannot address today. But the potential of the technology is worth plunking down the research funding, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/2016\/10\/18\/quantum-computing-firm-d-wave-targets-federal-market-with-new-washington-office\/\">procurement of an expensive D-Wave<\/a> system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome of this seems a little science fiction-y, but i will tell you we see it in labs in the U.S., in other countries, where you\u2019re actually seeing multi-qubit kind of computation systems come together and some really interesting advances in communications and sensing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lockheed
