{"id":21733,"date":"2020-08-31T19:25:39","date_gmt":"2020-08-31T19:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2020\/08\/31\/capella-spaces-first-sar-satellite-finally-launched-into-orbit\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:17:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:17:11","slug":"capella-spaces-first-sar-satellite-finally-launched-into-orbit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2020\/08\/31\/capella-spaces-first-sar-satellite-finally-launched-into-orbit\/","title":{"rendered":"Capella Space\u2019s first SAR imagery satellite launches"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The first satellite in Capella Space\u2019s planned constellation was successfully deployed to orbit Aug. 31, bringing the company one step closer to its vision of offering global on-demand synthetic aperture radar imagery \u2014 a capability in which the U.S. government has expressed increasing interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The single microsatellite lifted off aboard one of Rocket Lab\u2019s Electron rockets from the company\u2019s New Zealand launch facility, before eventually being deployed to a circular orbit at approximately 500 kilometers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dubbed \u201cSequoia\u201d by Capella Space, this first publicly available satellite in what is expected to be a 36-satellite constellation will be able to deliver synthetic aperture radar, or SAR, imagery of the Middle East, the Korean Peninsula, Japan, Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa and the United States. Customers for this imagery include the U.S. government.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2020\/01\/24\/a-new-satellite-to-produce-imagery-for-the-intelligence-community\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Sequoia_at_Night.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">A new satellite to produce imagery for the intelligence community<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Capella has already secured contracts with the Air Force and National Reconnaissance Office for the unique imagery it plans to provide using synthetic aperture radar.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike traditional electro-optical sensors used to create satellite imagery, SAR uses radar. This gives SAR some advantages over traditional imagery, such as the ability to produce images regardless of inclement weather (cloud coverage) and whether the sun is shining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, SAR can collect data on material properties, moisture content, precise movements and elevation. Capella Space claims Sequoia and the forthcoming satellites in the constellation will be able to detect sub-0.5-meter changes on the Earth\u2019s surface. As a reference to these capabilities, the launch mission was named \u201cI Can\u2019t Believe It\u2019s Not Optical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2019\/08\/23\/will-on-demand-tasking-give-this-company-an-edge\/\" target=_blank>Executives told C4ISRNET a year<\/a> ago that they hoped to get their first satellite on orbit by the end of 2019. However, the delay has not stopped Capella Space from securing a number of government contracts. The first came in November, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2019\/11\/25\/the-air-force-may-have-found-new-imagery-it-needs-at-a-pitch-day\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Air Force awarded the company a contract to use its SAR imagery<\/a> for virtual reality software, missile defense and to develop predictive intelligence to foresee foreign threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, the intelligence community got involved, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2019\/12\/11\/nro-looks-to-add-new-types-of-commercial-imagery\/\" target=_blank>National Reconnaissance Office awarding Capella Space a commercial study contract<\/a> to better understand SAR imagery. A deal with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/space\/2020\/05\/13\/navy-inks-deal-for-synthetic-aperture-radar-imagery\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Navy was signed in May<\/a>, and in June the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency signed the firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/06\/25\/capella-space-will-share-synthetic-aperture-radar-imagery-with-nga\/\" target=_blank>to a cooperative research and development agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While waiting for the launch of its first satellite, Capella Space has been able to produce SAR imagery using a specially outfitted airplane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was Rocket Lab\u2019s first launch since a July incident in which one of its launch vehicles failed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketlabusa.com\/news\/updates\/rocket-lab-mission-fails-to-reach-orbit\/\" target=_blank>, resulting in the loss of both the rocket and the three commercial payloads it was carrying<\/a>. Following an investigation, the anomaly was identified and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/07\/31\/rocket-lab-identifies-anomaly-the-caused-failed-launch\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Federal Aviation Administration cleared the company to resume launch operations<\/a>. During that investigation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/07\/10\/nro-and-space-force-sticking-with-rocket-lab-after-failed-launch\/\" target=_blank>both the National Reconnaissance Office and the U.S. Space Force told C4ISRNET<\/a> that they intended to continue using the company\u2019s launch
