{"id":21850,"date":"2023-07-03T12:45:36","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T12:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2023\/07\/03\/marine-corps-triples-enlistment-bonuses-for-cyber-jobs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T12:34:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T12:34:54","slug":"marine-corps-triples-enlistment-bonuses-for-cyber-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/cyber\/2023\/07\/03\/marine-corps-triples-enlistment-bonuses-for-cyber-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps triples enlistment bonuses for cyber jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines who enlist for jobs in cyber and crypto operations will get a $15,000 signing bonus \u2014 triple the bonus announced in fall 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A slate of bonuses announced in October 2022 had promised $5,000 as the cyber and crypto enlistment bonus, less than the enlistment bonuses for electronics maintenance ($8,000), chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense ($7,000), or music ($6,000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Messages\/Messages-Display\/Article\/3198380\/fy23-enlistment-incentive-programs\/\">Marine administrative message<\/a> from October 2022 noted that the amounts could be tweaked \u201cas recruiting environment conditions require.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, Marines enlisting into cyber and crypto operations jobs in fiscal year 2023 will receive the heftiest enlistment bonus for any job in the Corps, once they complete training and receive their primary military occupational specialties, according to a June 26 Marine news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The military occupational specialties eligible for the bonus are cyberspace warfare operator (1721), communications intelligence\/electronic warfare operator (2621), electronic intelligence\/electronic warfare analyst (2631), cryptologic language analyst (2641) and intelligence surveillance reconnaissance systems engineer (2651), according to the October 2022 administrative message and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/Portals\/1\/Publications\/NAVMC%201008-A%202022%20FY23.pdf?ver=BMzcMa2YVr2CJcmU6QvvDQ%3d%3d\">the Corps\u2019 index of specialties<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With cyberspace a more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/cyber\/2023\/06\/14\/cyberattack-wave-in-ukraine-linked-to-russias-gru-microsoft-says\/\">important domain of warfare<\/a> than ever, the service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/Portals\/1\/Publications\/MCDP%208.pdf\">has said<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2021\/11\/10\/cyber-marines-could-be-empowered-to-act-boldly-under-commandants-future-force-vision\/\">it needs Marines<\/a> who can defend against cyber attacks and launch some of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/2021\/12\/05\/us-should-expect-cyberattacks-in-any-struggle-for-taiwan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/120421-RNDF-Panel-4-8682.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US should expect cyberattacks in any struggle for Taiwan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Several U.S. defense leaders said they are worried that any confrontation with China over Taiwan would lead to a wave of significant cyberattacks against U.S. critical infrastructure that could disrupt day-to-day life.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps has acknowledged that it\u2019s having trouble finding enough people to fill its cyber slots. That is one of the reasons for the Corps\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/03\/06\/first-lateral-entrants-could-join-the-marine-corps-within-months\/\">talent management<\/a> initiatives, which are aimed at building a more seasoned, technologically capable force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps, along with the other military services, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2022\/12\/28\/militarys-special-pay-keeps-cyber-experts-from-jumping-ship\/\">is competing for cyber talent<\/a> with the civilian sector, which often offers higher salaries, a 2022 Government Accountability Office report noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fiscal year 2022, approximately 1,200 Marine recruits enlisted for the cyber jobs in question, according to Marine spokesman Maj. Jordan Cochran. The enlistment bonus that year for those jobs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Messages\/Messages-Display\/Article\/2752559\/fy22-enlistment-incentive-programs\/\">was
