{"id":21860,"date":"2022-05-16T22:05:14","date_gmt":"2022-05-16T22:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2022\/05\/16\/navy-creates-unmanned-surface-vessel-division-to-expedite-integration-of-unmanned-systems\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:22:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:22:42","slug":"navy-creates-unmanned-surface-vessel-division-to-expedite-integration-of-unmanned-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2022\/05\/16\/navy-creates-unmanned-surface-vessel-division-to-expedite-integration-of-unmanned-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy creates Unmanned Surface Vessel Division to expedite integration of unmanned systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pacific Fleet has stood up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/naval\/2021\/03\/18\/us-navys-new-unmanned-plan-leaves-some-unconvinced-the-service-can-stop-screwing-up-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\">Unmanned Surface Vessel Division One<\/a> to expedite the integration of unmanned surface vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unit will manage unmanned surface vessel experimentation for medium and large unmanned surface vessels like the Sea Hunter and the Sea Hawk, both of which will participate in anti-submarine warfare missions. The Pacific Fleet\u2019s Naval Surface Force held a ceremony May 13 establishing the command at Naval Base San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo meet the challenges of the 21st Century, we must continue to innovate the surface force,\u201d Cmdr. Jeremiah Daley, the commanding officer of the unit, said in a Navy news release. \u201cUSVDIV One will accelerate the delivery of credible and reliable unmanned systems in conjunction with increasingly capable manned platforms into the fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vice Adm. Roy Kitchener, commander of Naval Surface Forces, was also present at the ceremony and described the command as a \u201ccatalyst for innovation as we employ unmanned surface capabilities in the Pacific Fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe implementation of unmanned systems will increase decision speed and lethality to enhance our warfighting advantage,\u201d Kitchener said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The creation of the division follows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/04\/21\/navys-first-ever-unmanned-fleet-exercise-launches-off-west-coast\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy\u2019s first fleet exercise<\/a> for unmanned systems on the West Coast, called \u201cUnmanned Integrated Battle Problem 21,\u201d last year. Both the Sea Hunter and the Sea Hawk were involved in the April 2021 exercise, however, the Navy remained tight-lipped about specifics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rear Adm. Jim Aiken, who oversaw the exercise, told reporters such details were classified and related to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. However, he did share that one scenario in the exercise required drones to extend the sight of a warship to shoot a missile from long range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More recently, U.S. 5th Fleet hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2022\/02\/02\/us-navy-kicks-off-60-nation-maritime-exercise-in-middle-east-that-includes-unmanned-ai-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Maritime Exercise 2022 and Cutlass Express 2022<\/a> in January and February, combined exercises that included 9,000 personnel, 50 ships and approximately 80 unmanned systems from 60 regional navies. The exercises was designed to advance experimentation with unmanned vehicles and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of my biggest takeaways: We just need to to repeat that type of approach,\u201d Vice Adm. Scott Conn, deputy chief of naval operations for warfighting requirements and capabilities, said of the exercises during the Sea-Air-Space Exposition in April. \u201cBecause it involves our allies, we do not have a monopoly on this technology. We need to be aware of what they have and what they can bring in the campaigning effort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is still nailing down exactly how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/04\/21\/navys-30-year-shipbuilding-plan-offers-three-options-to-increase-the-size-of-the-fleet\/\" target=\"_blank\">unmanned vessels will integrate into the fleet<\/a>. The Navy\u2019s new 30-year shipbuilding plan offers three different scenarios for bolstering the size of the fleet \u2014 providing two scenarios for procurement under \u201ca budget with no real growth,\u201d and another alternative with an unconstrained budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the event of no real budget growth, the Navy anticipates having 89 to 149 unmanned
