The U.S. military branches need to establish a concerted development plan if they hope to effectively modernize, the Marine Corps\u2019 outgoing commandant said during a symposium speech Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think the speed of the joint force and a common goal in the future is what\u2019s lacking right now,\u201d Gen. David Berger said from the exhibition hall of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center <\/a>in downtown Washington. \u201cAnd we also don\u2019t have the speed, the velocity to get us there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berger\u2019s address headlined the first day of Modern Day Marine,<\/a> an annual three-day exposition showcasing the Corps\u2019 latest gadgets and end goals. The commandant, set to retire mid-July, spent much of his speech touting his branch\u2019s progress on Force Design 2030, a sweeping revamping of Marine structure, strategy and capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMarines are leading the joint force in innovation, modernization, and that\u2019s exactly what you would expect Marines to be doing,\u201d Berger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
