Christopher Mahoney on Tuesday listed various logistics and other programs undergoing testing in 2024 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/?oref=d1-nav\" target=\"_blank\">Defense One<\/a> \u201cState of Defense\u201d series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLogistics will stop you in your tracks if you haven\u2019t thought it through, if you don\u2019t have a system that is strong and functioning,\u201d Mahoney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps has been working with industry on medium and large tactical autonomous drones for aerial resupply and recently experimented with the autonomous low-profile vessel, a semi-submersible maritime drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be testing all three of those this year, so big year for that,\u201d Mahoney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/08\/05\/heres-what-narcos-could-teach-marines-sailors-about-cocaine-logistics\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cutter-stratton-seizes-cocaine-from-narco-sub.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Here\u2019s what narcos could teach Marines, sailors about \u2018cocaine logistics&#8217;<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Some unorthodox thinking from junior sea service officers looks at the drug trade for ideas about how to fight future wars.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approaches are part of the Corps\u2019 larger effort to find ways to get supplies to far-flung troops across vast distances. The service will continue to use its legacy platforms but needs more maritime and aerial options for contested areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of Force Design 2030 concepts includes using multiple unmanned, cheap, disposable systems that won\u2019t risk pricey platforms and human pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For larger items, the Corps is working on a shore-to-shore connector program called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/12\/31\/new-in-2024-testing-in-to-decide-future-of-new-marine-landing-ship\/\" target=\"_blank\">landing ship medium<\/a>. Karsten Heckl, head of Combat Development and Integration, also spoke at the Tuesday event and noted that the stern landing vessel, the current platform being tested in the LSM program, and the autonomous low-profile vessel were used in the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/3692664\/project-convergence-capstone-4-works-to-integrate-joint-multinational-defense-s\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Convergence<\/a> Capstone event in late February on Camp Pendleton, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/3692664\/project-convergence-capstone-4-works-to-integrate-joint-multinational-defense-s\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Convergence<\/a> is an Army-led, joint and multinational experiment that seeks to integrate capabilities such as sensors, air and missile defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans call for the LSM to be 200- to 400-feet long with 8,000 square feet of cargo space. The Marines are currently using a 254-foot commercial offshore supply vessel, the HOS Resolution SVL, refitted with a folding stern ramp for its LSM prototype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The low-profile vessel, or ALPV, is expected to have the capacity to deliver two Naval Strike Missiles for the Corps\u2019 anti-ship missile system to Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design was inspired in part by narco-submarines used by drug traffickers to move illicit payloads clandestinely, Heckl said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heckl said that a Marine cook was trained in under 30 days to program and deploy the low profile vessel for the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1197\" height=\"671\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7763801.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7763801.jpg.jpg 1197w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7763801.jpg.jpg?resize=300,168 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7763801.jpg.jpg?resize=768,431 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7763801.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,574 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1197px) 100vw, 1197px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cpl. href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/05\/05\/marine-corps-wants-13m-for-automated-war-zone-air-delivery-drones\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tactical Resupply Unmanned Systems<\/a>, or TRUAS, are large quadcopter drones that currently could carry payloads of 150 pounds over about nine miles, Marine Corps Times reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These fly autonomously, using preprogrammed waypoints for their flight pattern and itinerary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the larger side, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leidos.com\/insights\/leidos-develop-autonomous-uncrewed-aerial-resupply-system-us-marine-corps\" target=\"_blank\">defense contractor Leidos<\/a> announced a contract with the Marine Corps in 2023 to develop a helicopter-type drone with a double stack of rotors that could carry 600 pounds up to 100 nautical miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mahoney stressed the approach is \u201cmulti-model.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, it\u2019s adding breadth and depth to your logistics last tactical mile, which in the case of the Pacific
