WASHINGTON \u2013 The Pentagon expects to deliver its fiscal year 2019 budget request to the Hill on time, but a much-awaited defense buildup may not happen until fiscal year 2020, the department\u2019s No. 2 said Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI expect the budget to come out on time. That\u2019s the plan that we\u2019re on track to perform to, so that\u2019s early February,\u201d Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan told reporters at the Pentagon. \u201cWe\u2019re hoping the \u201918 budget comes out before the \u201919 budget but we\u2019ll see how that plays out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked specifically if a continuing resolution through January 19 \u2013 passed by Congress Thursday evening<\/a> \u2013 would delay getting the budget on time, Shanahan said \u201cI don\u2019t see why it would.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the deputy seemed to temper expectations for the 2019 budget, which industry has expected to include a potential major increase<\/a> for defense spending. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While FY19 will include a \u201cstep up\u201d in the defense budget, FY20 will be the \u201cmasterpiece,\u201d Shanahan pledged, in part because of the logistics surrounding the recently released National Security Strategy and its follow-ons, the National Defense Strategy, Ballistic Missile Defense Review and Nuclear Posture Review.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
