{"id":22504,"date":"2014-12-22T21:33:55","date_gmt":"2014-12-22T21:33:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2014\/12\/22\/new-site-to-bolster-cybersecurity-community-workforce\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:21:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:21:34","slug":"new-site-to-bolster-cybersecurity-community-workforce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/cyber\/2014\/12\/22\/new-site-to-bolster-cybersecurity-community-workforce\/","title":{"rendered":"New site to bolster cybersecurity community, workforce"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Cyber Challenge has partnered with Monster.com to build a community of cybersecurity professionals and verified talent pool that government and private sector employers can tap to fill positions in this critical field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new online community \u2013 set to launch at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cybercompex.org\/\" title=\"http:\/\/www.cybercompex.org\/\">CyberCompEx.org<\/a> in March \u2013 will act as a central, secure repository for resumes, profiles and interactions between cybersecurity professionals and prospective employers, fed primarily by participants in the Cyber Challenge camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cyber Challenge was created in 2010 to foster development of cybersecurity skills and help the government meet its goal of adding 10,000 new employees to fill the knowledge gap in the public sector. The Challenge had over 1,200 applicants last year, 350 of whom were accepted to one of four training camps where they interacted with industry and government experts in cybersecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The idea is to find those people and start them on the pathway so that they can become cybersecurity professionals,&#8221; said Karen Evans, Cyber Challenge national director. &#8220;If you talk to the competitors \u2026 they&#8217;re always asking, &#8216;This is great but what&#8217;s next?&#8217; That&#8217;s where CyberCompEx is going to fill that void.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the platform launches in March, it will begin as a social networking site but organizers hope to grow it into a community of cybersecurity experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There&#8217;s all this incredible energy and engagement that&#8217;s happening through the camps. What we&#8217;re going to be bringing to this is the ability to keep that engagement going year-round,&#8221; said Susan Fallon, vice president of global strategy and business development for Monster Government Solutions. &#8220;These are designed to help the individuals speak to and connect with other competitors, with professionals, with those running the camps \u2026 The point of the community tools is to drive collaboration and engagement between the candidates.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As competitors go through the challenges and camps, they can use CyberCompEx to build out profiles showcasing their expertise and achievements, as well as their connections in government and industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This isn&#8217;t just about getting a job in the cyber community, it&#8217;s about establishing a career,&#8221; Fallon said. &#8220;Those profiles combined with the resumes are then going to be accessible \u2013 this incredibly rich talent pool \u2013 to employers in the federal government.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there are several websites available for hosting resumes online, CyberCompEx is being designed as a community-specific site that offers secured communications and verified credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike a traditional resume hosting site where a user&#8217;s experience might be validated by recommendations from former employers, competitors who completed specific challenges will have that information verified directly by the organizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As an employer, when I&#8217;m looking for a set of hard skills \u2013 a person who can actually read firewall logs, a person who can actually configure the equipment at the site or a person who can read through and understand the sensitivity of these data \u2013 I&#8217;m going to know that these people actually demonstrated those capabilities and what they accomplished at those camps,&#8221; Evans explained. &#8220;So it&#8217;s not them just reading something or a person sending a resume in. It&#8217;s that knowledge and ability to know that these people came through this Cyber Challenge \u2013 there was an applied part of what they did and they actually did hands-on activities that demonstrated their capabilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CyberCompEx is also being designed as a social network to give users a sense of individuality within the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;One of the major feedbacks I got in the initial years of the Cyber Challenge was they said that [the goal of 10,000 new hires] really made them feel less special,&#8221; Evans said. &#8220;They don&#8217;t want to be one of 10,000; they want to be one of one.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building a profile on CyberCompEx will allow users to highlight their unique skills and experience and help prospective employers zero in on what they&#8217;re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As these individuals are adding skills and experience to their profiles, that becomes searchable to employers,&#8221; including federal partners and private industry, Fallon said. &#8220;An employer looking for specific skills can then be matched directly to individuals who have those skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monster Government Solutions has developed similar sites for other core communities, though this will be the first centered on cybersecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I talk to the campers \u2013 they want to work for the federal government,&#8221; Evans said. &#8220;This partnership with Monster is taking the quantity of what people say they can do and narrowing it down to a
