The Air Force is now taking concrete and institutional steps to address this challenge for the service.<br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a pair of initiatives, the Air Force Research Lab wants to develop rapid solutions to combat commercial off-the-shelf and small UAS, which are being used by a variety of actors, from nation states to militant organizations, such as the Islamic State group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of these efforts includes a broad agency announcement listed on the Fed Biz Opps website titled &#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbo.gov\/index?s=opportunity&amp;mode=form&amp;id=9157b6ec454992c13bd0a8dad2ce1b62&amp;tab=core&amp;_cview=1\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: https:\/\/www.fbo.gov\/index?s=opportunity&amp;mode=form&amp;id=9157b6ec454992c13bd0a8dad2ce1b62&amp;tab=core&amp;_cview=1\">Cyber Asymmetric Force Applications for Unmanned Aircraft Systems<\/a>.&#8221; The solicitation requests &#8220;research, development, integration, test and evaluation of technologies\/techniques to advance the technology and\/or increase the knowledge, understanding and capability of cyber operations technologies that can address current Department of Defense (DoD) gaps in operational asymmetric campaigns and force protection capabilities through rapid prototyping efforts.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The notice seeks concepts at the intersection of signals intelligence, electronic warfare and cyber operations technologies. Additionally, the Air Force said research efforts under this initiative are expected to result in experimental capabilities, concepts, theory and applications addressing cyber operations problems and asymmetric threats to support the future needs of units such as 1st Air Force, 24th Air Force, 25th Air Force, Air Force Global Strike Command, Air Force Security Forces Center and other government agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Projects specializing in highly novel, interesting, and applicable techniques will also be considered if deemed to be of \u2018breakthrough\u2019 quality and importance,&#8221; according to the notice, which notes that the broad agency announcement (BAA) is only for research and development. &#8220;Rapid prototyping of technologies that can be transitioned for operational use are of high interest, and will be assessed for transition through other contract vehicles.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topics of interest listed by the Air Force include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Maturing, integrating, and testing C2 and detection capabilities of UAS.<\/li><li>Developing new and applying currently available cyber operations technologies for use in airborne and ground platforms.<\/li><li>Developing technologies to better equip the war fighter for force and materiel protection operations.<\/li><li>Automatic decision-making and enabling autonomy in cyberspace operations.<\/li><li>Developing concepts and capabilities that intersect the areas of sigint, electronic warfare and cyber for asymmetric force applications.<\/li><li>Developing big-data analytics methods for asymmetric and nontraditional technologies and weapon systems.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second and comparative initiative as part of this effort is the Mitigation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (MUAS) program, which was developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) information directorate&#8217;s counter-UAS research and development team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While few details on this effort are currently available, the Air Force did say the MUAS program was &#8220;a result of needs identified through our support of AFRL&#8217;s Rapid Reaction program out of the AFRL&#8217;s Center for Rapid Innovation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The \u2018Cyber Asymmetric Force Applications for Unmanned Aircraft Systems\u2019 BAA is paired with MUAS in order to facilitate our goal of developing and fielding symmetric solutions, from a cyber perspective, to rapidly counter asymmetric threats presented through the nontraditional technologies and weapon systems, for force and materiel protection,&#8221; the Air Force told C4ISRNET. &#8220;The AFRL\/RI team works across multiple directorates and coordinates with the AFRL teams leading the Autonomy and
