The Army is concerned about how troops on patrol can continue to function without GPS, and it is pursuing a range of initiatives to bolster wayfinding for those cut off from the usual means of guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One effort involves the development of vision-aided navigation technologies. \u201cWe are using camera technology and electro-optic imaging sensors and applying them from a navigational perspective,\u201d said Gary Katulka, a lead engineer for vision-aided tech in the Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center\u2018s Command, Power and Integration Directorate\u2019s Positioning, Navigation and Timing Division, or CP&amp;ID PNTD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PNT team is working on systems that combine cameras with inertial measurement units, or IMU, which are made of sensors such as gyroscopes and accelerometers. By joining this sensor data to a camera\u2019s visual feedback, a soldier would be able to navigate effectively, even without GPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa-digital-show-dailies\/2017\/10\/13\/these-magnets-allow-soldiers-to-easily-connect-gear-to-their-uniforms\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/magnet2.jpg.jpg?w=225\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">These magnets allow soldiers to easily connect gear to their uniforms<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Troops can attach radios, lights and more to vest without having to screw anything in.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The combination is needed in order to overcome the limitations of IMU information, which tends to lose accuracy over time due to a phenomenon known as inertial drift. By correlating IMU against a visual inspection of the landscape, \u201cit allows us to get another read on our orientation and position, so we can stop that inertial drift,\u201d said Eric Bickford, an engineer in CP&amp;ID PNTD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s model for a vision-aided system would include a camera to register landscape features: It\u2019s a way to see corners, or to discern changes in color. But a camera would not register depth; it wouldn\u2019t necessarily be able to tell how far away a feature is from the user. The IMU would add that needed layer of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe algorithm would basically keep track of all the information from the camera. It would do a computation based on the physical measurements and determine a navigation solution for that individual or that vehicle,\u201d Katulka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the team claims some successes in testing possible vision-aided solutions, the effort is still in the early development phase. CERDEC plans to eventually transition vision-aided PNT to the Army\u2019s Direct Reporting Program Manager, Positioning, Navigation and Timing, which was chartered in 2015 to address PNT capabilities across the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/special-reports\/pnt\/2017\/10\/16\/army-wants-constant-pnt-capability-for-troops-without-gps\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/389260-P-SHK33-162.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army wants constant PNT capability for troops without GPS<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The potential PNT solution would use modular hardware and software on a tactical computer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CP&amp;ID planners also are teaming with other Army elements pursuing similar issues. They\u2019re working with the Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate, for example, to bring vision-aided solutions to bear in low-light circumstances. They say such devices could eventually be deployed in a soldier-wearable form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get there, they will have to overcome significant computing challenges. Getting a visual read on a landscape is easy. Turning that basic view into usable intelligence is another matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA human can easily look through a pair of binoculars and pick out a feature on the scene and compare that to a map,\u201d said Adam Schofield, the chief at CERDEC\u2018s Emerging Technologies Branch (Open Architecture).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut this is a computing system, and it requires algorithm,\u201d he said. \u201cTo run a picture through an algorithm and compare it to key points \u2015 the key points that the computer finds interesting are not necessarily those that you would find interesting. There are different algorithms to determine what is a key point, different algorithms for matching the key points from frame to frame as lighting conditions change. It takes a lot of planning and a lot of debugging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to software issues, developers also are looking at form factor, considering everything from hand-held to aircraft-mounted systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a certain urgency to the work, given the increased reliance on GPS and adversaries\u2019 growing propensity to try and deny that asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a hot area,\u201d said Paul Olson, PNT chief engineer. \u201cThere is hostile interference, and it is growing. We see it is Southeast Asia, we see it in Africa and in the Middle East. We\u2019re also looking to take soldiers into areas where GPS doesn\u2019t work: subterranean spaces, dense urban environments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All these factors
