Withdrawing U.S. forces from Afghanistan last year has allowed Warthog crews to focus instead on honing their tactics in the Pentagon\u2019s other two top-priority regions, Europe and the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the Air Force is reimagining the role of its counterterrorism mainstay for a new kind of fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon maintains a regular A-10 force in the Indo-Pacific at South Korea\u2019s Osan Air Base, flown by the 25th Fighter Squadron. The region\u2019s sole Warthog unit doesn\u2019t boast the speed or stealth of fighter jets, but flies maritime security patrols and helps with search-and-rescue efforts in addition to its more conventional airstrike roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The loud jet equipped with a rapid-fire cannon can also send a message that the U.S. intends to protect its partner nations and keep international airspace and waterways open to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/09\/28\/meet-lt-col-john-marks-the-airman-with-the-most-time-in-the-a-10c-warthog\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marks.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Meet Lt. John Marks, the airman with the most time in the A-10C \u2018Warthog\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Marks logged his 7,000th hour in the Warthog on Sept. 1.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But almost 2,000 miles south of Osan \u2014 about as far apart as Colorado and Maine \u2014 Guam offers a more remote, realistic proving ground than what\u2019s available in South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 25th Fighter Squadron periodically visits Andersen to practice wartime skills, but appearances by the U.S.-based A-10 units are rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moody\u2019s 23rd Wing was designated as one of several new \u201clead wings,\u201d a main unit in charge of a team of aircraft from different bases that train together in preparation for future deployments.
