Gregory Mayer, who ran the 5th Mission Support Group at Minot; Maj. Jonathan Welch, the 5th Logistics Readiness Squadron commander; and four unnamed subordinates lost their jobs due to a \u201closs of confidence\u201d in their ability to lead, Air Force Global Strike Command said in a short release Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group was in charge of caring for the infrastructure, fuel and logistics support at Minot, the only Air Force installation that houses two legs of the nuclear triad \u2014 ballistic missile silos and strategic bombers.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2023\/02\/27\/six-leaders-fired-from-air-force-nuclear-base-in-north-dakota\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Minot.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Six leaders fired from Air Force nuclear base in North Dakota<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Air Force declined to say what led to their ousters at Minot Air Force Base, or what disciplinary action they may face.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defense official, who was not authorized to discuss details of the firings publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the dismissals were based on noncompliance with safety regulations for vehicles and equipment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/01\/politics\/air-force-fires-leaders-nuclear-safety-inspection\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">CNN also reported<\/a> Wednesday that there is no indication that the failed nuclear surety inspection was related to the handling of a nuclear weapon itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the decision to relieve the officers of command was based on the results of one safety inspection, the units had not been compliant for some time. the defense official told AP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That official said the dismissals reflect the tougher line the Air Force has taken on discipline within its nuclear ranks, which have weathered a series of safety concerns and controversies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2007, a B-52 Stratofortress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/06\/25\/you-can-call-2007-nuke-mishandling-an-embarrassment-but-dont-call-it-the-minot-incident\/\" target=\"_blank\">took off from Minot<\/a> mistakenly loaded with six nuclear-armed AGM-129 cruise missiles and flew across the country to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. In 2014, a nuclear safety inspections <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/b942adacae524dcfa7fbc85ed6292433\" target=\"_blank\">cheating scandal<\/a> at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana embroiled scores of missileers and officers, and in 2016, investigators busted an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/social-media-north-america-wyoming-wy-state-wire-ap-top-news-98f903367b50404cb3c9695bcabefa5a\" target=\"_blank\">LSD drug ring<\/a> at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minot, Malmstrom and F.E. Warren are home to a total of 450 silo-based Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement about the firings, Maj. Gen. Andrew J. Gebara, commander of 8th Air Force, said the responsibilities for the nation\u2019s warheads were a \u201cno fail\u201d mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have very deliberate and disciplined inspection protocols and we expect 100% compliance. It\u2019s that important to us and anything below that threshold is unacceptable,\u201d said Air Force Col. Brus Vidal, a spokesman for Global Strike Command, which is responsible for silo-based and bomber-launched nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe purpose of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Surety Program is to incorporate maximum nuclear weapons surety, consistent with operational requirements, from weapon system development to target or dismantlement,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctrine.af.mil\/Portals\/61\/documents\/AFDP_3-72\/3-72-D50-NUKE-OPS-Surety.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Air Force doctrine<\/a>. \u201cThis program applies to materiel, personnel and procedures that contribute to the safety, security and control of nuclear weapons, thus assuring no nuclear accidents, incidents, loss or unauthorized or accidental
