{"id":24396,"date":"2018-07-13T09:43:29","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T09:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2018\/07\/13\/northrops-fire-scout-drone-gets-a-new-look-for-its-european-debut\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:39:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:39:53","slug":"northrops-fire-scout-drone-gets-a-new-look-for-its-european-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/uas\/2018\/07\/13\/northrops-fire-scout-drone-gets-a-new-look-for-its-european-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"Northrop\u2019s Fire Scout drone gets a new look for its European debut"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RAF FAIRFORD, England \u2014 Northrop Grumman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2018\/04\/09\/weaponization-of-unmanned-fire-scout-helicopter-on-hiatus-until-2023\/\" target=_blank>MQ\u22128C Fire Scout unmanned helicopter<\/a> is making its European debut Friday at the Royal International Air Tattoo, giving potential international customers their first chance to get up close and personal with the drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unmanned aerial system won\u2019t be flying at RIAT this weekend \u2014 in fact, this MQ\u22128C has had its avionics stripped out and is intended as a showpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Northrop hopes to showcase the Fire Scout\u2019s ability to accomplish a mission set it hopes will entice foreign buyers: anti-submarine warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is going to be the first time that the larger Fire Scout is going to be seen by some of our partner nations that will be attending RIAT,\u201d said Jack Thomas, the company\u2019s director of Fire Scout operations. \u201cThe why behind that, I would say, is when you look at where the program is from the U.S. Navy\u2019s perspective, I think they see it as a really good opportunity to at least expose to a larger audience what the capability is that the U.S. Navy has been started to integrate here now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fire Scout at RIAT will be displayed alongside a new anti-submarine warfare pod not currently in use by the U.S. Navy. Northrop believes the drone can serve as a longer-endurance alternative to manned helicopters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/04\/23\/south-korea-to-open-bid-for-anti-submarine-helicopters\/\" target=_blank>which are widely used by international countries to perform the ASW mission today<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/riat\/\" target=_blank><b>Read more from the 2018 Royal International Air Tattoo!<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from the ASW pod, which is made by U.K.-based defense contractor Ultra Electronics, the MQ\u22128C at RIAT will also be paired with radomes from Leonardo\u2019s Osprey 30 active electronically scanned array radar. Northrop is currently integrating that radar with the unmanned helicopter, with a planned early operational capability planned in 2019 and initial fielding in late 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat radar is a fantastic radar. Jalen Robinson\/U.S. Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MQ\u22128C \u2014 an unmanned version of the Bell 407 with Northrop-devised controls that allow it to autonomously take off and land on ships \u2014 is currently bound within the line of sight of the ship upon which it\u2019s embarked, although the Navy has a technology road map that would allow it to go beyond that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, even now, the altitude that the MQ\u22128C flies at allows it to see way past what a shipboard radar would normally be capable of doing, Thomas said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny kind of a mast-mounted radar on a ship will at maximum give you 12\u201320 [nautical miles] depending on the atmosphere that day,\u201d he said. \u201cYour Fire Scout itself can go up to 100 miles from the ship because of its own line of sight link back to the ship, and then its radar can go over 100 miles itself. So now you\u2019ve extended your ability to sense and detect out to multiple hundred miles for the ship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fire Scout is set to be fielded aboard the Freedom- and Independence-class littoral combat ships to conduct surveillance. The \u201cCharlie\u201d version of the system has double the endurance and three times the payload of the earlier MQ\u22128B model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MQ\u22128C is scheduled to hit a number of milestones over the next year as it moves from development to fleet integration. Last week, the Navy conducted at-sea tests of the Fire Scout aboard littoral combat ship Coronado for the drone\u2019s initial operational test and evaluation period, and the service will now begin
