{"id":24544,"date":"2019-09-10T11:30:49","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T11:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2019\/09\/10\/the-us-navy-just-had-a-major-breakthrough-with-autonomous-weapons\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:47:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:47:12","slug":"the-us-navy-just-had-a-major-breakthrough-with-autonomous-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2019\/09\/10\/the-us-navy-just-had-a-major-breakthrough-with-autonomous-weapons\/","title":{"rendered":"US Navy makes a major breakthrough in autonomous weaponry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LONDON \u2014 The U.S. Navy has achieved a major milestone in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2019\/05\/08\/when-will-the-us-navy-be-able-to-autonomously-seek-and-destroy-mines\/\" target=_blank>efforts to autonomously combat <\/a>one of the most persistent threats it faces, the service\u2019s deputy head of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations\u2019 mine warfare office said Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy successfully demonstrated what\u2019s known as single-sortie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2019\/05\/22\/naval-group-led-team-gets-2-billion-mine-hunter-contract-for-belgian-dutch-navies\/\" target=_blank>mine hunting<\/a>, which sends out an autonomous boat to sweep for mines with a sonar system, detect a mine-like object, classify it and then deploy another system that destroys the mine, according to Stephen Olson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a significant achievement in the yearslong effort to \u201cget the man out of the minefield\u201d by deploying robots to perform a job traditionally performed by manned minesweepers and highly trained divers. Beyond the safety benefits, it also quickens the process. The successful test opens up the possibility of having a small cadre of human operators who can oversee whole packs of robots as they sweep minefields on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat single-sortied, detect-to-engage was a great example of something that would represent supervisory [control of unmanned systems],\u201d Olson said. \u201cIt was a small group [of people] who oversaw the entire effort: Multiple systems were in operation together, working together and cueing each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When reached for comment on the successful test, the Navy would not divulge further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2019\/01\/15\/the-us-navy-moves-toward-unleashing-killer-robot-ships-on-the-worlds-oceans\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sea_hunter.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Navy moves toward unleashing killer robot ships on the world\u2019s oceans<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy is planning to take the first few steps into a radical future, which, if it comes to pass, will upend how the fleet has fought since the Cold War.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCurrently the Navy cannot disclose any further details of the test beyond what Mr. Olson described,\u201d Navy spokeswoman Lt. Brittany Stephens said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The systems under development in the pursuit of single-sortie mine hunting are Textron\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/surface-navy-association\/2018\/01\/11\/textron-us-navy-are-loading-guns-and-missiles-on-their-unmanned-mine-hunting-boat\/\" target=\"_blank\">Common Unmanned Surface Vehicle<\/a>, or CUSV, about the size of a bass boat, which deploys Raytheon\u2019s AQS-20 sonar system to detect the mines. After an operator authorizes an engagement, the Barracuda Expendable Mine Neutralizer is deployed to autonomously reacquire and destroy the mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you are familiar with mine warfare, it\u2019s painfully slow,\u201d Olson said to an audience at the DSEI conference in London. \u201cWhen leadership says, \u2018We need to clear a minefield,\u2019 and you say, \u2018How long do I have?,\u2019 they look at their watch when they should pull out a calendar. I\u2019m going to tell them it is going to take weeks, and they\u2019re going to say: \u2018I need it done now.\u2019 &#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May, a Raytheon executive told Defense News that the company was closing in on demonstrating the capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll three of these pieces are maturing right around the same time,\u201d Randy Brandenburg, a Raytheon business development executive with its Seapower Capability Systems division, said at the time. \u201cWe\u2019re working hard to put this together and we\u2019ll be demonstrating some of this \u2026 this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2017\/09\/13\/autonomous-mine-hunting-boat-will-be-delivered-to-the-royal-navy-this-winter\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARCIMS_-_WTD71_Delivery.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Autonomous mine-hunting boat will be delivered to the British Navy this winter<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The ATLAS Remote Combined Influence Minesweeping System is slated for delivery in December, according to Atlas representatives at DSEI in London.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>\u2018Huge vulnerability\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is also moving in on the ability to deliver an effective counter-mine mission package to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/09\/18\/congress-to-buy-3-more-lcs-than-the-navy-needs-but-gut-funding-for-sensors-that-makes-them-valuable\/\" target=\"_blank\">littoral combat ship<\/a>, albeit more than a decade late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mine-hunting mission package for LCS was supposed to achieve its initial operational capability declaration in 2008. But perhaps more importantly, the service may finally have an effective solution to combating a threat that has bedeviled it for years: cheap mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the past it has been mostly divers \u2014 we\u2019d sent [explosive ordnance disposal teams] out to go neutralize mines by putting some kind of charge on it,\u201d said Bryan Clark, a retired submarine officer and analyst with the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. \u201cIt\u2019s a hugely complicated, multistage operation with a lot of people involved. So going to single-sortie mine hunting, you are really saving a lot of time, certainly by at least a third the time it takes to clear an area that has mines in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can now transition to a purely unmanned mine-clearance operation where I have a ship that has the AQS-20 getting towed behind the CUSV, searches for [a] mine and the CUSV can send out a mine-neutralization torpedo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The breakthrough with single-sortie will mean the Navy is only limited by how many robots it can buy to do the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s big not just because it gets people out of the minefield but because it\u2019s scalable now,\u201d Clark said. \u201cOnce you take the people out the minefield, now you can search as big a minefield as I have unmanned vehicles, whereas in the past you were limited by how many minesweepers I have and how many humans I have to operate them. Scalability was constrained.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, getting this mission right will prove that autonomous systems can have an impact on war fighting, Clark added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the mission that the Navy absolutely had to get autonomous systems to go do,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s crazy to have humans go out and remove mines.
