No, do."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 President Donald Trump said Thursday that the administration will \u201ctake a very long look\u201d at a massive multibillion-dollar contract the Pentagon is preparing to award for a cloud computing system, citing \u201ctremendous complaints\u201d he\u2019s heard about the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amazon Web Services Inc., a division of Amazon, and Microsoft Corp. are finalists for the contract estimated to be worth up to $10 billion over a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump said during an unrelated event at the White House that companies that are no longer in the running to land the deal, known as Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, or JEDI, have lodged complaints about the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/it-networks\/cloud\/2019\/07\/10\/jedi-how-we-got-here\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19143020274486.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">JEDI: How we got here<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">After months of back-and-forth in court filings, oral arguments are finally here.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican lawmakers troubled by the Pentagon\u2019s handling of the contract also took their concerns directly to the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m getting tremendous complaints about the contract with the Pentagon and with Amazon,\u201d Trump said when he was asked about the matter during an Oval Office appearance with the Dutch prime minister. \u201cThey\u2019re saying it wasn\u2019t competitively bid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking at it very seriously,\u201d the president said. &#8220;It\u2019s a very big contract, one of the biggest ever given having to do with the cloud and having to do with a lot of other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump said some of the \u201cgreatest companies in the world\u201d were among those complaining about Amazon, and he said the administration will look \u201cvery closely\u201d at the contract because \u201cI have had very few things where there\u2019s been such complaining.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump is a critic of Amazon, the e-commerce retailer owned by Jeff Bezos. Bezos also owns The Washington Post, and Trump has criticized the paper\u2019s coverage of the administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president\u2019s comments injected new uncertainty into a project the Defense Department has said is vital to maintaining the U.S. military\u2019s technological advantage over adversaries. Whichever company wins the contract will have the monumental task of storing and processing vast amounts of classified data. The Pentagon says it will enable troops to advance the use of artificial intelligence in warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oracle and IBM were eliminated from an earlier round of competition, leaving Amazon and Microsoft as the two finalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amazon and Microsoft declined to comment Thursday on Trump\u2019s remarks. Oracle didn\u2019t immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IBM said in a statement Thursday that it \u201chas long raised serious concerns about the structure of the JEDI procurement\u201d and continues to believe the Defense Department \u201cwould be best served by a multi-cloud strategy\u201d- which involves multiple cloud systems operated by different companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IBM did not say whether it had shared those concerns with the White House. Both IBM and Oracle formally protested the process last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A federal judge last week tossed out a second challenge by Oracle alleging that the bidding process was rigged in Amazon\u2019s favor, and some in Congress have expressed concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida sent a letter last week to White House national security adviser John Bolton asking that the Pentagon delay awarding the contract, contending that the process suffered from a \u201clack of competition\u201d and the use of \u201carbitrary criteria and standards for bidders\u201d that could waste taxpayer dollars and \u201cfail to provide our warfighters with the best technology solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rubio had also expressed concerns about plans to award the contract to a single vendor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon has said it plans to award the contract as soon as Aug. 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Democratic Rep. James Langevin, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee, said Thursday he has full confidence in the Defense Department&#8217;s cloud strategy and that it&#8217;s important that the project be allowed to move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Langevin said in an emailed statement that it would be \u201cwholly inappropriate\u201d for Trump or any member of Congress to interfere in the procurement process, especially since the courts and the Government Accountability Office \u2014 the watchdog for Congress \u2014 have rejected challenges to the Pentagon\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four House Republicans, including the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, wrote the president July 18 urging him not to delay the award of the contract, saying that \u201cthe courts have upheld the DoD\u2019s handling of the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe believe that is is essential for our national security to move forward as quickly as possible with the award and implementation of this contract,\u201d the letter signed by Reps.
